75 cL bottle, courtesy of KimJohansen. Pours dark brown to black with a small white head. Dark malty and roasted aroma. Winous and chalky wooden and roasted malt flavoured, light bitter and wooden lingering finish. Roasted and vanilla flavoured, whiskey flavoured. Smooth and slight boozy finish.

Courtesy of some cool ratebeer dude. Pours dark brown with bronze edges and tan head. The aroma is big boozy barrel notes of bourbon, oak vanilla and heat to go along with chocolate brownie in the background. The taste brings up initial notes of vanilla, chocolate, caramel (ok, great start) and roastiness. Wow, that comes together very nicely. The barrel boozy bourbon picks up toward midway carrying along some oak. The barrel notes begin to fade as the finish approaches leaving behind tasty snippets of chocolate and caramel. Nice. For my taste it could use a bit less barrel time.

Bottle #314 sampled at the DC local gathering. Pours an opaque black with a soft, ringing white head. Aroma is HUGE with the bourbon, vanilla, wood, coffee. Flavor is very hot with booze and bourbon, vanilla, coffee, dark chocolate. Finish is very hot and boozy. Way too much bourbon, you really lose the beer that they started with which is a bit of a shame.

Bottle 75cl.[ Courtesy of henrikb ]. Clear dark brown black color with a average, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate, dusty, licorice, alcohol. Flavor is heavy sweet and coffee bitter with a long duration, and a alcoholic burn finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090710]

Bottle shared by decaturstevo at Peter’s NY gathering - thank you so much! - never in a million years did I think I would get to try this beer - wow, the porter-ish qualities of this beer have been changed dramatically - nose of toasted oak, cinnamon, and coconut, with some spicy alcohol underneath - alcohol warmth in the flavor, but no burn - subdued oak, toasted coconut, bourbon - these qualities are kept in check, though, and never overpower, like in most BA beers - some oxidation is apparent, but it adds to the depth, like when you taste it in an old british barleywine - a solid BA beer.

Dark brown. Light head. Hazy. Vanilla and some chocolate and light fruit notes on the aroma. Palate is abundant vanilla, with a nice barrel character. Extra vanilla with hints of dates, maybe a little bit of booze. Suffers from being one-dimensional.

courtesy of zuluflyboy. Thanks for bringing all these amazing AleSmith to the tasting. Pours deep black, with beige head. Aroma has lots of bourbon, wood/barrel, fresh vanilla and caramel. Taste, barrel that doesn’t come too over the top, malty, chocolate, notes of vanilla. Like all other barrel versions, this one has a good warming alcohol mouthfeel. It has all the goodness of a great crafted porter with the little extra of the barrel that AleSmith has truly mastered.

Bottle shared with the folks at the Bruery on my way back from the release. Pours with a small, off-white head that sits over an extremely dark brown body. Aroma of oak, vanilla, bourbon, toast, chocolate, alcohol. Taste is woody, oaky, with chocolate, caramelized pecans, bourbon, and vanilla. Still very hot and boozy, but I like it that way, and the beer was released today, so I was kind of expecting this. Marvelous beer!
