For this JDW beer festival, we welcome our first international lady brewer, Tonya Cornett, who has travelled from the USA to brew this special beer for us at Marston’s Brewery, Burton upon Trent. This amber-coloured beer has an enticing creamy head and a sweet and fruity aroma, with hints of citrus. The flavour is light and spicy, with an initial crisp, bitterness balanced by a kiss of malt sweetness which leads to a long, dry and hoppy finish.

Cask (gravity) @ J.D Wetherspoon - Air side, London - Standsted Airport. [ As Bend Brewing Wild Blue Yonder ]. Clear medium to dark brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, overriped berry - fruity, moderate hoppy, old citrus - orange - tobaco, old wood. Flavor is moderate sweet, light acidic and moderate overriped fruity tobaco bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20090420]

[Cask at Monk’s Retreat, Reading] Dark amber, loose white head. Creamy, vanilla & caramel up front. Some mild citric bitterness in finish. Overall easy to drink, but disappointingly bland. the festival guide implied that the brewer felt she had to tone down the bitterness for the British market. Shame she toned down the flavour too.

(Cask at Crosse Keys JDW, London City, 16 Apr 2009) Nut brown colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit and orange peel. Malty, fruity taste with notes of orange peel, dried fruit and a mild citrussy bitternes in the finish. Medium body with "a kiss of malt sweetness" (as stated above). Had expected something hoppier, but it’s a tasty and well balanced beer.

Cask at W’Spoons Heathrow Terminal 2. An amber coloured beer with smallish head. Quite fruity, sweet, malty. Hops barely noticeable though. Quite drinkable but also lacking in complexity. This particular JDW festival has produced some really plain beers.

Cask a the Gig House (JDW), Wokingham. Chestnut brown with a scummy looking, cream coloured head; lacking any clear aroma; sweet and fruity to start with some caramel; some grapefruit bitterness to finish. OK, but unexciting.

Cask-conditioned at the Berkeley JDW, Bristol 19/04/09. Deep amber with next to no head. Gentle fruity malt aroma. Flavour started sweet before some earthy hops and a dry finish. OK.

Cask handpull at Society Rooms, JDW, Maidstone. In the style of an amber ale, but lacks the PNW hop kick. Malts are alright, some nice red fruit, some hop dryness, but as I say so disappointing that the brewer hadn’t brought more hops with her. My big hope for this festival dampened by a lack of courage and ambition. Not all of us like bland boring beers.
