Named after the native cattle of Galloway, embodying all that is best in the regon, this dark porter derives it’s colour from the abundance of deeply roasted malts used in the brewing. It is a robust drink which is ideal as a “winter warmer” and can aid recuperation from illness since it embodies a high nutritional value.

Cask handpull at the Sulwath Brewery Tap. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Coffee and liquorice dominate the nose. Sweet taste which turns to a malty Guinness-esque sourness. Solid and very tasty, an enjoyable beer.

Cask at the standing order. Pours clear dark brown, red chinks, thin beige head. Aromas of treacle scones. Taste is treacle too. Very thin and watery, like diluted treacle I guess. Some coffee notes sneak past the treacle, but it’s pretty poor overall.

Bottle from Aldi Gorgie
Very dark chestnut brown, nice rich frothy dense off white head, some lacing
Aroma of roasted malts, toasted cereal, some burnt toast, dark coffee roast
Taste as aroma, roasted malt, dark caramel malts, some sweet dark malts
Palate - Medium carb and body, soft carb after left to settle, some creaminess. Finish of burnt roast, some lingering roast malt.
Overall - Quite a decent flavour, would like to try this on cask

Third Sulwath bottle of the evening: 500ml just out of date when opened on 4th Aug 2012. Dark brown with no ruby red hints I could find: on top a full and fairly deep head of tan coloured foam. Burnt malts of course rule the nose and taste: coffee, dark chocolate and liquorice all in the flavours. Not rich or creamy, but far from watery, a medium depth of body I suppose. OK more than great.

Bottled. Deep ambery brown colour with a mediumsized creamy/fluffy head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is nutty, chocolaty, mild ashy with some liquorice. Flavour is rather similar. Pleasant, and quite bodied for being 4.4 %.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, dark bread and dried fruit. Roasted, malty taste with dark bread, coffee, chocolate, prunes and a mild bitterness in a dry finish. Medium body. Tasty and nice porter.
