Named after the native cattle of Galloway, embodying all that is best in the regon, this dark porter derives it’s colour from the abundance of deeply roasted malts used in the brewing. It is a robust drink which is ideal as a “winter warmer” and can aid recuperation from illness since it embodies a high nutritional value.

Cask at the White Horse, Parson’s Green. It pours opaque black, with a thin tan head. The nose is bitter-sweet dark chocolate and coffee. The taste is caramel, treacle, salt, dark fruit, lactose, wood, dark cherry and a touch of smoke, with a bitter-sweet finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Good balance, medium body and soft carbonation. Nice.

Cask at the White Horse, London. Pours brown with a moderate, tan head. Has really sweet, like, cocoa liqueur aroma. Reminds me of Baileys. Medium sweet flavor with, yes, a Baileys-esque creamy coffee character. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Sweet, faintly roasty finish, bit of mocha, bit of coffee liqueur. Interesting and alright.

On cask at Cloisters. Pours opaque black with some head. The nose has liquorice and charcoal. The taste is of treacle, toffee and crumbly biscuits. The palate is medium to full bodied with a nice thick texture and a finish that is quite pleasant and not too astringent. Overall, good beer.

Deep brown black, sweet rich treacle nose, with a rich complex roast malt, lots of malt fruitness and roast linger. Such a shame to see a few low scores for such an excelent beer that had gone off. And Poor show of the standing order to serve it in such poor condition.

Bottle. Sweet aroma. The flavour is roasted, malty and sweet, perhaps with a little dust. Liquorice aftertaste. Low carbonation and pleasant mouthfeel.

A very dark beer with a slight red shine underneath a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet and roasted, while the flavor is sweet - too sweet for me, and with notes of burnt plastic, combined with a roasted note, which in no way balances the sweetness.

Bottle at London Gathering Nov 05. Black beer with thin beige head. Nice oily liquorice aroma with raisins. Bit sour in the mouth with some sweetness from the raisins and brown sugar. Intense malts on end. Pretty good dark beer
