Roger Protz says you can't have Black IPA. So we brewed an IPA & used dark malt to change the colour... Remarkably, it didn't suddenly cease to exist...

24th Jan 2014: shared bottle at the Cotteridge Wine meet. Cheers EvilEmpire for supplying this. Really dark brown body with a decent white head. The nose was a blend of roasted maltiness, liquorice and hedgerow fruits. The taste had a bitterness with a citrus feel within the malty base. Different and pleasant, another take on the fairly new style of BIPA’s. I am warming to the beers within this ’modern idea’ of darker IPA’s.

Tasting at Paul and Lorna’s flat. Deepest Croydonia. Thanks to Paul. Almost opaque dark brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is airy and slightly soft. Light minerally carbonation. Very mild dark malts, bare trace of roast and a slight tang. Little malt cream. Mild piney hops, whisper of citrus. Airy finish. Fine.

Bottle at the pre Zwanze tasting @Soapy’s house with big polish shlongs, thanks to Bropey, 20/09/14. Light black with a well appointed tan covering that dissipates then retains in a minature format. Nose is liqourice, spice, earthy hop, blackcurrants, light pine, roasted notes. Taste comprises bitter tropicana, nice layer of pine, roasted malt, liqourice, grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close peppered with earthy hop bitterness. Decent CDA.

Bottle shared pre Zwanze 2014. Thanks to Roger! Pours mostly clear brown with a large, thick and frothy beige head. Dry roasted malts in the aroma with touches of burt pine, earth, cocoa. Light to medium sweet flavor with bittersweet baking cocoa, burnt beef, earth, torched grass and pine, hard and mineral-heavy water. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Nice hard roasted malts on the finish, dry baking cocoa, earth. Solid. Good and dry.

Bottle from beer gonzo. It pours darkest brown with a thick tan head. The nose is rich roasty, earth, coffee, pine needles, soap, sherbet and orange peel. The taste is bitter, rich roast, earth, cocoa, orange peel, tangerine, sherbet and light with a dry, bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Well rounded and rather quaffable.

Cask (Nags Head, Reading) - Very dark brown, almost black, with some red tinges when held to the light. Liquorice, coffee and hints of soapy hops in the aroma. The taste is roasted and moderately hoppy (was expecting more) and has notes of liquorice and roasted malt standing out.

Bottle from Beer Central, Sheffield. Just about black. Thin, sticky, lasting, off white head. Roast malt. Unripe, dark fruit. Stewed tea. Quite tannic, really. Taste is caramel sweet, for an instant, then a big bosh of pithy bitterness. Chewy palate. Soft carbonation suits the beer well. Long, rising, bitter finish. Tasty beer. Oh...and obviously extra points for the label...
