A traditional London style porter which used chocolate & black malts in the recipe; a good full roast aroma with hints of liquorice on the tongue and a dry bitter finish.

Bottled (from AbM). More or less black colour with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, some leathery notes as well as mild ripe fruits. Flavour is liquorice, chocolate, some mild roasted and smoked notes along with some slight hoppy bitterness kicking in as well. Smooth and quite nice. Chocolate and mild coffee in the aftertaste along with some slight ashyness.

50cl bottle. Pours opaque black with a lovely fawn creamy head. The nose has dark chocolate with a slight liquorice hint. The taste has more of the same. The palate is light to medium in body with a similar texture and a nice burnt elegant enough finish.

500ml Bottle conditioned: best before Mar 2013, poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard on 22 Aug 2012. We are talking dark here: it looks almost jet black, even when held to a strong light source: on top a good firm head of tan coloured bubbles. The smell is semi-burnt malts and lightly roasted/smoked coffee beans on a rough bed of flaked dark chocolate. The flavours were very simular to the smell, but add some liquorice roots (remember them?) to the aromas mentioned and the taste comes alive. The body is leaning towards full and almost creamy, certainly deep and flavoursome. The dark chocolate feel giving the beer a slightly bitter taste as you get into the tasting. This beer is more-ish; meaning a single pint isn’t enough to appreciate the complexity and delights it holds. This is one of a four pack (different beers) from this brewery a mate gave me: I hope the other three brews are as good as this one.

Served on Cask into a half pint pot at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham (Dec ’11). Very dark brown to black in colouration and a small head. Smells slightly burnt/roasted nuts, bitter chocolate. In the taste I found roasted malt, liquorice, chocolate and a little fruit in the finish. Mouthfeel was decent with a dryish to bitter finish, not too watery and a decent amount of chewy-ness.

Bottle from Beers of Europe 030212 Black...ruby edges...thick frothy tan head
Aroma - Roast malt....light coffee...sweet dark malts..light savoury..yeast..quite light aroma...bit of smoke
Taste - Dark caramel malts..some roasted malts...light chocolate..hint of liquorice...much more flavour in the finish
Palate - Medium carb and body...rich dark malts...some coffee..smooth..bitterish..bit savoury..oily texture - strangely gets thicker in the mouth...coats the mouth. Finish - dryish..complex flavour left on palate...lingers nicely then clears...perhaps starts to get a bit claggy by the end of the bottle - but much richer flavour in the finish
Overall - A nice porter with that rich intense flavoured finish

Cask, gravity dispensed at the Kingston Arms, Cambridge, 6th Beer Festival. Poured opaque choclate brown in colour with no head; aroma of earthy, chocolate malts; slightly chewy body with deeply roasted matls and a hint of roasted nuts; leading to a dry finish. A classic porter.

Bottle that I picked up at the Real Ale shop, Wells-next-the-Sea June 09 consumed in a field at Cropredy Festival 13-8-09 shared with Craig Pours very dark brown with creamy bubbles that are tan in colour. Touch of sourness and roasted malt and some sour apple. The taste is tangy and malty and a touch of roastines but on closer inspection I noted that the BBD was Feb’ 09 which has disappointed me slighty as I think than in peak condition this beer could have been so much better, as it is its just about ok. Cask at White Cliffs BF 09. Black with dark brown edges, and lasting bubbly dark beige head. Roasted aroma, some choc. Lots of coffee and choc, really roasted. Excellent condition, strong flavours. But not over the top. Soft espresso coffee at end. Bit powdery in mouth. Nice though.
