Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one!
The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online.
Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt.
Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Location: 12 oz bottle from Greens Discount Beverage - Atlanta (Buford Hwy), 5/12/09
Aroma: Caramel, rye, some earthy hops, bit of alcohol
Appearance: Brownish copper color, medium off-white head
Flavor: Starts off a nice sweetness, the aftertaste has a bit more of an alcohol burn
Palate: Lasting and full mouthfeel
Overall Impression: I wouldn't necessarily call this an IIPA, not hoppy enough for that, but a good beer. I was not expecting that amount of alcohol burn from an 8.5% beer.

12 oz bottle. Hazy orange body with a medium off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt and caramel with citrus fruity hops. Flavor is sweet malt and caramel with a refreshing fruity bitterness. Harmonic in flavors and a fine well balanced body. Long and bitter finish. A fine and straight forward IPA with a complex hop flavor.

Bottle. Pours a hazy, orange body with a small beige head. Really malty and hoppy with sugary and malty sweetness, as well as lots of pine and resin. I’m thinking rye as well, but not sure if that’s because of the beer’s name. Full-bodied, sticky sweet in the mouth with lots of sugary maltyness and enough pine and resin to make it balanced. The alcohol is well hidden, making it a dangerous beer, as it’s quaffable as hell. A beauty of a kind we’re sure missing in Norway. (080626)

Nice thick head, amber color. Hopy, matly, clear presence of barley and rye. Notice a subtle traces of spices, fruity (orange) and caramel. Thick on the palate. A great beer, get it while it’s on tour!

Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours clear copper with nice off white head. Malty aroma that is being punctuated by pine hops and a mild rye twang. The taste has a full boldness of flavor with sweet mildly roasted malts, some mild rye malt twang and a suitable level of pine hop bitterness too. There’s some yummy sweet citrus notes and grapefruit hop bitterness that run into the finish. For a moment or two it has a sweet orange hard candy like feel. Really nice tasting brew I could drink on a regular basis.

Thanks to UncleMattie for sending this one as part of my first trade. Pours a translicent, nearly opaque, orange, brown, caramel color with a thin, slightly off white head that faded fast. The aroma is balanced, citrus hops with other fruity notes prevalent (mango, pear). The hop aroma is mellowed with a distinct malt character that makes you think of caramel and chewy grains. Flavor is wonderful, the hops initially take a back seat to the sweet, sugary malts that taste like candy. The hops come in at the finish and bring milder citrus fruits (orange and tangerine). Very thick in the mouth with a lasting sweetness. You can really taste the difference in the malt character due to the amount of rye used. Unique for an IIPA and as it stands alone, delicious.
