Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one!
The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online.
Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt.
Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

Sludgey, big oxidized citrus hop nose with chewy caramel. Why do all these Terrapins smell old as dirt? Has pineappley sweet esters with rich piney, earthy hops and a full-scale chewy maltiness. I have no idea what they’re trying to accomplish here.

12oz bottle-pours a tan head and amber color. Aroma is lots of caramel, then spicy/earthy hops. Taste is spicy/earthy hops on the tip of the tongue with some effervescence, lots of sweet caramel malt, rye, dry, roasty. The effervescence is diminishing/gone by mid taste. Close to a barleywine, nothing wrong with this, just doesn’t quite impress.

Light hop aroma. Gold color. Flavor is very sweet, especially for the style. Much more focused on malt than hops. Bitter finish with light apple, but the apple does not seem to be a flaw.

12 oz. bottle from tjthresh (via pintocb). Pour is clear golden - amber with visible carbonation and a decent sized slightly off-white head. Aroma is fresh piney hops with a bit of a flowery smell. The taste reveals a lot of malt, and that certainly takes the front seat. The hops (piney and resinous) carry the middle through to a nice bitter finish. I got only the slightest whisp of rye in this one. The malt - hop transition was great in this one, though I found the palate was a bit watery.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of sk8viking. Slightly hazy amber golden with an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, citrus and a bit of metal. Quite full-bodied with very sweet caramel and lots of caramel. The finish isn’t really overly bitter. Pleasant. 270607

Bottle from buckybeer; Nose is fruity with some light citrus hops, and a little vanilla and caramel; hazy copper with a small beige head; well balanced slightly sweet carmel malt and citrus hop flavor with the hops lasting into the finish of the medium body.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 6 Oct) Amber colour with small off-white head. Fruity and sweet nose with notes of raisins, grapefruit and pine needles. Fruity, very sweet, taste with notes of pine needles, resin, grapefruit, raisins and prunes. Full body, rather short finish. Great taste, but definitely on the sweet side.
