500 ml bottle, as Harvey's Lewes Castle Brown, from Seven Cellars. ABV is 4.8%. Hops are Fuggle and Progress. Very dark brown colour, small beige head. Aroma of medium roast malts, liquorice and mild coffee, a hint of blackcurrants. The flavour is distinctly malty and medium sweet, notes of caramel and liquorice, fruity hints of blackcurrants and prunes, moderate bittering hops. Very enjoyable to drink.

Bottle from Harveys Brewery Shop. Pour a very dark brown (coca cola look) with a thin beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma of dark fruit, caramel, dark malts, not too much on the nose. Taste is very malty with ripened dark fruit, raisin, caramel and bread. Very chewy sticky mouthfeel. Full bodied. Nice lingering aftertaste of more dark fruit. Added notes of toffee, liquorice and a little port wine. A touch sweet but not overly so. Unique and a very nice winter beer.

4/4/2018. Bottle from Cobbetts, Dorking. Bit of a gusher. Pours dark brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark fruit, malt, liquorice, biscuit, toffee and coffee. Medium plus sweetness, moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation. Decent brew, if a little sweet.

Bottle at home from the brewery. A lovely dark pour and a minimal head. The flavour was all about that malt and that imparted a lovely richness to the mouthfeel. It wasn't sweet, which was a bit surprising, but very welcome. A very tasty brown ale for grown ups.

Bottle at Royal Oak, Borough. It pours darkest brown with a decent beige head. The nose is rich malts, malt loaf, soreen, plum, prune, blackcurrant, fruit jam and port wine. The taste is bitter-sweet, rich malty action, dark fruits, plum, prune, jammy berry, earthy roast, red grape, Vimto and port wine. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Not quite as good as the cask, but one of Harvey’s best bottled beers for sure.

Bottle from Harvey’s online. Appearance - deep brown with a lovely red chink at the bottom. A shame the head is thin otherwise it would’ve been a 5 for appearance. Nose - dark sugar and subtle red fruit. Taste - loads of red fruits. Redcurrants and cherry with dark sugars. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long d Overall - it’s not a typical brown ale. But it’s interesting.

a) Bottle, pasteurised: Rating from 2011: Für ein englisches Bier starke Schaumbildung mit meiner schönen dunkelbeigen Schaumkrone. --> 12,12,13,13,12,13 - 12,70

b) Cask @ GBBF 2014, unpasteurised. The beer starts smooth and nice malty. Fresh with hints of nuts and a nice malty fruitiness Very smooth. Malty, fruity, hints of nuts in the mainpart, very intense with roasted hints. Nice and smooth till the end, deep with a nice dryer malty body.
Great brew! Nice balance between nuts and caramel, roasted malt and malty sweetness. 12/12/13/12
