Craig on Heat Tasting at ChrisO’s. Clear deep red - amber beer. Small bubbly pale cream colour head. Palate is light and a little airy. Modest fine carbonation. Tangy toffee laden malts. Whispers of tangy dark chocolate and dried fruits. Trace of mellow cognac, slightly sourish. Light dry finish. Not bas at all.

Bottle shared at chriso’s - many thanks to Craig for this one. Pours clear garnet with a frothy, light tan head. The nose holds old bread, some sweat, aged berries. Medium sweet flavor with nips of oxidation, fruitcake, raisins, toffee, figs. Medium bodied with fine carbonation and oily texture. Sweet finish with fruitcake, old toffee, dried fruits, berries. Certainly some oxidation present but the overall beer is wonderful.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 2007. Pours very murky dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, raisin, plum, prune, fig, brown bread, light roast, and herbal earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/fruity malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, raisin, plum, chocolate, light roast, and herbal/toasted earthiness. Zero bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, toffee, brown bread, raisin, plum, chocolate, light roast, and toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice balance and complexity of dark malt and lightly fruity flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice English barleywine style. All around good balance and complexity of deep malt flavors and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Bottle via trade. It pours very dark brown with a small beige head and some suspended particals. The nose is light roast, coffee, earth, chocolate, alcohol, raisin and Xmas pudding. The taste is caramel, wood, dark fruit, spice, chocolate, warming alcohol, light bitterness, coffee liqueur and earth, with a dry, light roasty finish. Full body and soft carbonation. Good depth of flavour and well balanced. As usual traquair do not dissapoint.

Thanks to my Secret Santa blomster for this one! Minimal tan head over a clear, deep chestnut brown body. Complex aroma of figs and prunes with some anise. The flavor is not what I was expecting from the aroma. Very smooth as well as sweet but not cloying with nutty roast malts balancing and enhancing the malty sweetness.

Sample @ SMÖF 2012. Vintage bottle (not sure which year). Pours hazy dark reddish brown with a small bubbly offwhite head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace worth mentioning. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, toffee, madeira wine, prunes, wood, alcohol, vanilla fudge, leather and raisins in brandy. Taste is sweet, tiny bitter, slightly fruity and malty with caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, madeira wine, alcohol, prunes, raisins, leather, dusty soil and wood. Mouthfeel is sound, soft, tiny boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is sweet, malty, tiny sour and fruity with caramel, toffee, wood, lemon zest, prunes, raisins, leather and alcohol. Good stuff. Nicely oxidized.

Bottled. A dark amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, alcohol, and over ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, dusty hops, alcohol, malt, and caramel, leading to a dry alcoholic finish..
