Nickel Brook took some of the best Pinot Noir barrels from the Niagara wine region and tossed their Bolshevik Bastard Imperial Stout in it? I mean, what have they done to the soft oak and subtle, earthy fruit notes from the barrel? Their Imperial Stout has WAY too much chocolate, coffee and dark fruit flavours for the delicate notes imparted by the barrel-aging process. I don’t know what they think they’re doing. So what if it’s delicious? Drink it today, or cellar it to enjoy later as it matures. A votre santé!

Bottle at Black Christmas 2018, vintage 2018, 11% ABV
Black colour. Like the name says, it's lightly vinous, but well integrated with the beer. Rich Imperial Stout, dark chocolate, more alcohol than sugars.
Excellent.

Bottle shared at Cotteridge Convention 2018 - cheers all! Pours black-brown with a creamy beige head. The nose holds wood, dried berries, nips of ash. Medium sweet flavour with further woody notes, berries, toffee, ashy roast. Full bodied, oily, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, with notes of dark berries, bitter cocoa, toasted wood. Really good beer.

23rd June 2018 and another Imperial Stout to share at the Cotteridge gathering; bring them on, 'I luv um'. This one poured black, it's foaming head a deep tanned affair. Chocolate, dark fruits and a red wine ester or two made up the aroma. Smooth tasting beer, again chocolate and dark fruits (hedgerow berries mostly) from the nose are very evident in the flavour, mellow (from the barrel ageing?) and very drinkable.

Bottle split at Cotteridge Convention IV, many thanks, 23/06/18. Black with a decent tan head. Nose is tangy dark fruits, charr, barrel, cocoa dusting, stewed fruits, mellow roast. Taste comprises chocolate cake, dried fruits, charr, dusty fruit rinds, earthy, mellow wine barrel, oak, toffee, light spice. Medium plus body, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a rising alcohol kiss. Ok impy but lacking a touch of depth for a double digit device!

Had this at the Ratebeer Tasting and Cotteridge Gathering, Cotteridge Wines, Cotteridge, Birmingham, Saturday 23rd June 2018. Beer number fourteen. Wow this is good; it makes a difference that the temperature is spot on. Lovely balance the usual big bollocksy Impy stout is completely reined in by the barrel ageing. Its fruity, but lots of dry sharp tangy berries, possibly may end up being there or thereabouts as my favourite beer of the day. Great beer, really lovely. A8 A5 T9 P5 Ov16 4.3
