Nickel Brook took some of the best Pinot Noir barrels from the Niagara wine region and tossed their Bolshevik Bastard Imperial Stout in it? I mean, what have they done to the soft oak and subtle, earthy fruit notes from the barrel? Their Imperial Stout has WAY too much chocolate, coffee and dark fruit flavours for the delicate notes imparted by the barrel-aging process. I don’t know what they think they’re doing. So what if it’s delicious? Drink it today, or cellar it to enjoy later as it matures. A votre santé!

Opaque black pour, big dark brown head. Aroma is very tart, and vinous, with big Red wine notes, along with some strong balsamic vinegar notes with some solid roasty, dark, burnt malts in the background. The mouth feel is very full, and oily, and the carb is medium. The finish is quite roasty, some soy, and burnt coffee, mixed with some subtle vanilla from the barrel.

Bottle. 2020 edition, aged in Pinot Noir barrels, 11%. Color: Black, very thin light brown head. Aroma: Vinuous, red wine, Brett. Taste: Quite a lot of Pinot Noir, vinuous, clearly present Brett. Base beer almost disappeared. Some roasted malt left. Oak wood. Dry. Full body, just below average carbonation. Moderate sweet, moderate to over moderate bitterness, lightly vinuous tartness. Beware of the funky Brett in this beer, only stated on the backside of the label. As a Brett lover I liked it very much though.

Bottle. A- Oak, vinous, tangy, cocoa, alcohol. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Red wine, tannins, cocoa, funk, tangy, green apple, mild cinnamon, black cherry. P- Full body, sharp texture, average carbonation, tangy finish. O- Not near as good as the Cafe del Bastardo and yet to compare it to the Kentucky Bastard. 3 years of age and just too much tannins and acidic vinous notes. I think this is promising but it's not where I want it to be. When I think of Wine barrel stouts, Smuttynose Stallion is the standard for me. Too much tangy funk and not enough dark fruits.

Quarantine Beer #078 sampled at home on 04/23/2020. Cloudy dark brown color with a medium beige head that diminishes steadily to a dense film. Patchy lace. Aroma of oak, fruit, malt and chocolate. Full-bodied with a chocolatey and vinous oak character and notes of malt and coffee. The finish is oaky with a roast malt and chocolate aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

2017 vintage drank spring 2020. pitch black color. Pours a fascinating head of deep purple and white. Amazing nose of oak, Pinot and dark chocolate. Very vinous. Low medium carbonation, Modestly tart, dark chocolate, coffee,
excellent Pinot character with good amount of oak. This is like sour stout in Pinot barrel. Some lovely cake character in the background. I just loved this everything works in harmony.

Bottle shared at Cotteridge Convention 23/06/18. Many thanks! A black brown coloured pour with a halo of tan head. Aroma is red grapes, cassis, berries, brown sugars, warming alcohol. Flavou is composed of mixed brown malts, red berries, vinegar, cranberries, solvent, hot alcohol. Palate is semi sweet, highish carbonation, tangy. Lingering liquorice.

Bottle. Pours opaque dark brown with large foamy tan head, soy sauce - roasted malt aroma, low carbonation, medium bitter faintly acidic, woodsy, winey mocha taste, thin body, long bitter mocha finish. Not bad, but not great either, I had expected a fuller body.

Dark brown, thin head, vinous, choc, light toast, this has a mellow toasty note, hints of vinous fruits. Nice - not as rich as I’d like and a bit tart. But still pretty good.
