Mysteriously rich, deep and malty — this beer is the antidote to big, hoppy IPA’s. Macavity is brewed in the style of an Old Ale and it’s all about the malt. In this recipe we use several speciality roasted malts which makes the beer a feast of rich toffee, fruitcake and caramel.

Cask at Hants Oktoberfest 2019. Fruity plummy aroma. Opaque dark brown. Bubbly light beige head. Medium bitter with a tart vinous edge. Light-medium bodied. Slick verging on creamy. Long astringent finish. Remember really liking this but it's a tad unbalanced bitter wise from cask as opposed to having had it from a bottle.

17/7/2019. Bottle shared at the South West tour bottle share. Bought at Inn At Home, Newbury. Pours red brown with a small beige head. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruits, dried fruits, roasted malt, toffee, fruit cake and light berries. Moderate sweetness and medium plus bitterness. Medium body, slight oily texture, and a bit above average carbonation (apart from which it was very nice).

Bottle thanks to a James. It pours darkest red brown with a decent beige head. The aroma is rich, brown bread, leather, fruit cake, light spice, smoke, cereal and wood. The taste is dry, wood, leather, brown bread, resin, charred wood, tannins, with a drying finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. A bit twiggy and woody.

Cask at the Bell, Waltham St Lawrence. A deep chestnut with a loose cream head; sweet malty aroma; thick and syrupy in the mouth with a malty caramel taste and a herbal bitterness that reminds me (in a good way) of cough mixture; then a dry earthy finish. Jolly good.
