In the true spirit of keeping things local, Hobsons have created a Plum Porter with a twist by using Shropshire Prune Damsons. The Shropshire Prune has been described as the essence of ’plum’ and is possibly the oldest known variety of damson in the UK. This porter delivers on provenance and intense flavour. a delicate balance of rich damson and roast malt sweetness.

Tried at the Cotteridge 3 pre tasting. Deep brown colour with a tan head. Aroma has stewed plums. Taste has light spice and fruit. Decent plum fruity finish.

Bottle at Cotts Convention 2017. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The aroma is quite sweet, sticky, candied plum, date, prune, sugary and I suppose a touch artificial. The taste is sweet, sticky, perfumed, sugared plum, candy, artificial sweetener, D&B and prune. Light - medium body and average carbonation. A bit sweet and one - do me so you for my liking. So-so.

500ml bottle into an Abbot Ale glass tankard at home on 30th Dec 2015. Deep dark Ruby/Brown body, on top a smooth beige head. Damson like aroma and taste to this malty brew. Fairly dry in the mouth even if a little sweet initially on each sip. OK, but no world beater.

Cask at the Wellington, Birmingham. Poured a clear reddish brown with a thin off white head and lots of clingy lace. The aroma is red berry fruit, Christmas spices. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth smoky malt, fruity, light liqourice bitter palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation.

500ml bottle from Appleyards, Shrewsbury. Pours very dark brown with small off-white foam head. Very nice, sweet plummy aroma. Sadly doesn’t materialise as much in the taste. Quite a light body, soft earthy malts with a damsun fruitiness coming through on the finish. Pleasant but a bit under par compared with other plum porters.
