Phoenix IPA is brewed like the stock beers of yesteryear, strong and full of hops, designed to mature and mellow with age. Norfolk grown Maris Otter is the base for this strong ale, boldly hopped with English Golding and Challenger hops and ‘topped off’ with Amarillo from the USA to give an addictive citrus finish.

Goodmans Fields Spoons. Cask. Hazy amber beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth and dry, reasonable fine carbonation. Trace of dry creamy sweetness and a whisper of sulphur. Bitterish citric peel. Mild sweet esters. Light dry finish brings a fresher orange. Comes together eventually.

Cask handpull at Moon Under Water Leicester Square Spoons. Hazy amber colour thin white head. Some syrupy malt. Some drying hop character on the finish. Some grapefruit. Well it’s an apa. Very dry finish. Some orange fruit. It’s fine. An orange grapefruit apa. Never would have expected Woodfordes to do something like this. Yes decent beer. I liked the dry finish.

Cask at the Bear (JDW), Maidenhead. Amber with a scummy white head; aroma of drying varnish; grainy body with some caramel; and a thin, dry finish. Disappointing.

Cask at the Assembly Rooms, Solihull. Poured a clear medium amber with a frothy white head. The aroma is light hop bitter. The flavour is moderate to light bitter witn a smooth malt fresh citrus hop bitter palate and short bitter finish. Medium bodied witn soft carbonation. One of the fruitiest IPA’s I’ve ever had.

Cask at the Ledger House Canary wharf. Clear golden/ light amber coloured pour with a steadfast off white creamy head. Aroma is subdued citrus, fruity hop. Flavour is tangy sweet citrus fruits, grainy tanin, hint of caramel sweetness. Some plastic notes longer in the finish. Palate is semi sweet, medium body and lowish carbonation. OK stuff.

Third of a pint, hand-pulled in The Shrewsbury Hotel (Shrewsbury) on 20th Oct 2014. Brown/amber body, clear, off-white topping. Dry and fairly boring with more hops than malts in the aroma and taste. Expected more from a brewery whose beers I have generally enjoyed before. Didn’t get any citrus notes as the blurb suggests, in fact I got very little out of this brew.

Pint at the Royal Hop Pole, Twekesbury. Firstly not sure why this has IPA in the title. This has a English bitter look and taste. Not much in the way of IPA hoppiness.
