Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 24th June 2014. Almost black with thin off-white ring-and-flim leaving scant lacing. Roasty aroma with leafy hop. Roasty in-mouth with coffee notes and leafiness. Roastiness and sweet berry fruits in finish. Zingy with medium body.

Cask @ The Bhurtpore Inn, Aston. Pours a deep black. Couldn’t get much in the way of liquorice (I think this is the same beer!).. instead quite a lot of toasted malts with a big hint of tobacco and dark fruits. Quite a smooth drink, probably the best i’ve had from Hobsons thus far.

Cask at the Earl of Essex - London. Pours clear brown with a fine, creamy khaki head. Moderate roasted malts in the nose with bits of dried ark fruits. Light to medium sweet flavor with further dried and lightly leathery dark fruits, berries, prunes, hints of roasty cocoa and earth. Light bodied with fine carbonation; good condition. Finishes with decent ripe, aged fruit sweetness, some raisins, nips of roasted malts and dry cocoa. Nicely balanced stuff.

Cask at the Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a clear very dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is light roasted malt and a little smoke. The flavour is light bitter with a watery malt light spice pepper hop palate. Light bodied with soft carbonation. Way too light for me and I didn’t get any liqourice at all. Quite disappointing.

Hand-pulled half-pint at lunchtime (13th Dec 13) in the Crown Inn, Oakengates. Pours a lovely deep, dark brown, OK it was almost Jet Black. The head was a tanned affair that tried to stay the distance. The nose and taste were slightly over roasted, but not burnt malts and less liquorice in flavour than the name suggests. Mild chocolate and coffee hints came through just as strongly as the liquorice notes in both the aroma and taste. The body depth was fine, not too sure about being rich, but certainly smooth and full. Overall a very pleasant and easy to drink Stout.
