The thing about stouts made with additions of things like coffee is, while they taste “just like coffee,” they taste just “like coffee.” A well constructed stout is a study of potential flavors. Both bitter and sweet at once, with just four ingredients aromas can ping-pong between: coffee, chocolate, vanilla, smoke, dark fruits, molasses and myriad others without running over each other. Drink Unjunct and don’t ask us to treat this one.

Growler fill from Bottle Caps, Watertown. A low tan head with sustained lacing. Chocolate, cream, coffee and bubblegum on the nose. An appealing, slick and balanced IS. Chocolate, ground nuts, mild coffee and a lactose creaminess all add to the experience. A touch of alcohol warmth, roasted malt and toffee as well.

Deep, pitch black coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall rich brown head that fades quickly (and looks crazy when it dies, given that the small bubbles fade like soda), but leaves behind a very telling and pungent, jet black glow with an oily top. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla, light icing sugar, some very subdued coffee (on the lighter side of the roast scale, as in 'city') with a softer molasses and pure caramelised sugar flavour with a very soft bitterness towards the end, but in a good way. Medium to perhaps even Full-bodied; Strong rich malt flavours dominate with the roasted malt, molasses, star anise, nutmeg and especially allspice noticeable throughout with a large malt backbone, but bunches of flavours and a really robust yeasty finish that hits precisely. Aftertaste shows the grass, dry, herbs and especially spice characteristic from this, balanced out by some strong malt and alcohol throughout. Overall, a very enjoyable true stous that shows more of an Export Styled / Foreign Stout than anything else, but pungent with the punch and alcohol coming through at the very end. I sampled this pints-ized, 473 mL can purchased from the [late] New Beer Distributors in New York, New York on 10-June-2017 for US$4,25 sampled just two years later on 21-September-2019 at home in Washington, missing the best beer store in New York.

16 oz can poured, with much thanks to Jow for the can! Solid stout here, and a fun fence rider between imperial, and original style stouts. Love it. Coffee forward aroma. Some slight malt, sweet milk chocolate. Flavor is bold and slightly sweet at the same time. Good roast to it. Flavorful, toast finish. Very nice stout.

Can from New Beer Distributors, NYC. Brewed & canned @ Two Roads! Canned on 02/06/17, enjoyed 4 months later. Pitch black color. Brown head, dense at first, then rocky, pretty good retention. Aroma’s of roast(ed malts), dark chocolate, (ground) coffee, hint of red fruit. Retronasal it’s sweetish, roasted, chocolate, again light red fruit. Flavor is under moderate sweet, firm roasted, dark chocolate. Medium bodied. Choclate and roast in the finish. Good stuff!

16oz can pours a opaque black with some sticky, beige head. Nose is big with burnt molasses, BBQ sauce, some smoky notes, toast, burnt marshmellow, some earthy soil notes. Flavor has more molasses and burnt caramel sweetness, toast, pumpernickel dough, a little soy, some tamarind, BBQ sauce. Full bodied, lightly sweet and lightly smoky finish.

16 ounce can into snifter, canned on 2/6/2017. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and foamy dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, plum, cherry, licorice, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, smoke, light vanilla/char, herbal, floral, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, plum, cherry, licorice, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, smoke, light vanilla/char, herbal, floral, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness. Light roast/char and herbal hop bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, raisin, plum, cherry, licorice, brown sugar, toasted dark bread, smoke, light vanilla/char, herbal, floral, and roast/toast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero acrid/astringent roast flavors after the finish. Light dryness from roast/char bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, fairly silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8.5%. Overall this a fantastic American imperial stout! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and light-moderate fruity yeast/earthy hop flavors; very smooth and easy to to drink with the balanced bittersweet finish. Very rich and malty with great complexity; complementing fruity yeast and earthy hop backing without being overpowering. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured into a becher pint glass, the appearance was a thick jet black pour with a good finger and a half’s worth of dark tan head. Dies off at a nice pace. Filmy lace coats the sides.
The aroma bleeds sweet to spicy black licorice coating some dark fruits but also with milk and dark chocolate flowing all into it very nicely. Nice level of roast for balance.
The flavor moves between the roast and the sweet of the combination of dark fruits, molasses, black licorice, milk and dark chocolate. Semi-sticky roasty aftertaste flowing nicely into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fair sessionable to sipping quality about it. Mild carbonation. ABV felt a tad lower than projected by the brewer, but I’m okay with that.
Overall, wonderful American Stout that I would love to have again. Too bad, I had to drive out of my current distribution to find this gem.
