Description
We started brewing in Burton-Upon-Trent in 1834. Then in 1898 we got itchy feet. So we moved down the road to the Albion brewery. We still like it so we’ve not moved again since.
We came to Burton for the water. Well, for the rocks the town was built on to be precise. The water trickles down through a thick layer of gypsum before we bring it back up again through our well. That’s what gives our beers the depth of flavour, character and crisp refreshing bitterness that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Bottle, Sainsbury’s, Kidlington selling at £1 a bottle. I was quite shocked to note that this was only 2.8% but then I suppose brown ales are quite weak. Poured dark brown with barely a head to speak of, bit caramelly on the nose and sweet in the taste, I found this to be absolutley fine and nice to drink something that is still quite tasty despite it’s lack of oommph.

Cask: Copper coloured, lacing off-white foam; fruity bitter nose, a bit yeasty; moderate bitter flavour, light bodied; light fruity, later mild bitter finish. O.K., a quite good thirst-quencher, clean and refreshing, not very demanding.........

Bottled. Clear, dark brown with a reddish hue, topped by a small, dense tan head. Quite heavy roasted malt in the aroma, along with coffee and malty sweetness. Sweet and roasted flavor. Thin to medium body, with some Co2 in the mouth. Long roasted finish. It wasn’t until I finished the bottle that I noticed the ABV. Surprised I was. (060712)

Cask at Cph Beerfestival. Golden beer with no head or carbonation. It has a bitter hoppiness in the aroma, along with a weak maltiness. Some hops and malt in the flavor, with notes of fruits and citrus, mostly grapefruit. Thinbodied and a finish with grapefruit. A bit boring, I think. (060519)
