Description
Bringing life back to life, economically and culturally, of the humble village of Esparron, thanks to beer… This was Robert Christoph's incredible bet. Based in a former wine cooperative in the Haut-Var, he lovingly brews light beers from local products from organic farmin.

In 2018 the brewery was taken over by Nadzaro Corré, who was previously ... cellar master in a wine-growing estate. The young brewer is betting on the local menu and on short circuits. Thus, he makes it a point of honor to obtain supplies from local farmers. He has also planted a few vines of hops in Artignosc, and his beers are brewed with Verdon water.

750 ml swingtop bottle, as Esperluette Blanche, brewed by Robert Christoph, Ancienne cave coopérative, Route de Rians, 83560 Esparon de Pallières (Var), France. ABV is 5%. Ingredients include sugar, spices and jam/marmalade. Golden colour, moderate to low white head. Strong sweetish aroma of yeast, flowers, honey and mild spices (but not necessarily coriander - this is not your typical witbier). Medium sweet, yeasty and mildly spicy flavour, minimal hops. Could be better.

Bottle, 75cl. It pours a hazy, golden body under a big, creamy white head soon diminished into half a finger height. Some curtains. There’s some fruity sourish notes in the mostly fruity aroma. Pale malts and a yeasty touch too. Yellow apples, grass, some pine cones, canned pineapple and peaches. There’s a faint sourish touch in the flavor too, seems to be intended, or at least not an infection. There’s a light bitterness too, with grass, resiny notes and all the fruityness known from the aroma. Medium body, quite dry, and with a pleasant carbonation level. Long, mostly fruity finish with a little bitterness balancing it off. Overall, I’m not impressed, but it’s sure better than I expected from a pale French microbrewery beer. 141005

Opens with a resounding "PHFT!" that shoots foam in my eyes, but the beer does not gush. Huge white lasting head. Slightly hazy yellow body with light carbonation. Fruity herbal honey aroma with spicy sandalwood and earth notes. Very dry mealy herbal fruity taste with spicy notes. Mid-to-light body. Harsh mealy mouthfeel. Dry, and faintly acidic, metallic wooden aftertaste with fruity spicy notes. This is probably too old, although label says "consume before end 2013", and I recently bought it from Vinmonopolet. Drainpour. Weirdly it does gush slightly when I’m halfway through the glass. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly web order. Lot no 1303.)

As I carefully ease open the cork, it sprays beer right in my eyes. Because I push the cork back down, a new burst goes off, on my clothes and the chair opposite. In dismay I let the cork go, and unleash a flood partly into the glass, and partly onto the floor. Damn you, Robert Christoph.

By the time I’ve finished cleaning up, the head has collapsed to a small, white layer. Hazy opaque pale yellow body with some darkish particles at the bottom. Spicy sandalwood and ginger aroma with mealy soapy notes. Dryish spicy sandalwood and ginger taste with mealy floral notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish gingery spicy soapy aftertaste with floral coriander notes. Interesting and unusual. The first pour was very nice, but later pours had much more sediment, and got heavier and had less flavour. The rating reflects an average. (0.75l bottle, wine monopoly web order.)

750ml swing-top bottle from Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget. Shared with Elisabeth, Jan Erik, Finn and Stefan. Opens with a good shot and pours a snow white head to a hazy golden body. Wheat fruity aroma, lightly spiced. Sweet and tart fruity flavours. A little tartness to the finish. On an average level (Tromsø 13.11.2013).

750ml swing-top bottle from Vinmonopolet, bestillingsutvalget. A cloud layer to a yellow-gold coloured body. Rocky white head, lasting. Distant smell of coriander spice and sweet apples. Pears and apples in the flavour profile. Dusty hops to a mid-sweet ending. Slightly metallic and a bit thin. Okay, but rather anonymous (shared with friends at the November Grain session, Tromsø 13.11.2013).
