625ml bottle [Thanks again, Aziz!]. Clear, orangey golden colou rwith average to huge, thick, creamy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Mellow malty and slightly ephemeral, floral hoppy aroma, a touch of maize; the floral flavours vanish and give way to some strawy undertones. Taste is sweet-ish pale malty, floral hoppy, minimally soapy, a touch of maize, minimally bitter and bready finish; minimally watery. Could have been worse.

My third Third World pale lager in three days and my devotion to racking up a healthy country tick count is showing somes signs of strain. First of all, it seems to be some sort of west African tradition to sell massive 625ml bottles when a sampler would do me just fine, but I guess no one said this was going to be an easy job. Just buckle down and get through it. Pours clear gold from the bottle and leaves a white head of relatively short retention. Aroma is cereal, a bit of honey. Taste is lightly sweet, finish is short with a light grainy bitterness. The palate is nice — smooth and refreshing. But overall this is a fairly generic pale lager without a lot of character. Still over half the bottle left and my mood is souring. A really bad beer would be easy — drainpour and the next please. But this one is just over the border of pale lager decency. It tortures you with golden reproach — I came all the way from Africa, I’m drinkable, you can’t just throw me down the drain! You paid more for me than some people in Ghana earn in a day. And still it sits there, big and massive, and now it’s going flat. It’s not going to get any better. And there is a black IPA waiting in the fridge. Do I want to spend my whole alcohol for the night on this? Thank God there’s always the wife to bail me out of problems like this.

Bottle at Gold Coast, Woodside. It pours jet black with a gigantic tan head. The aroma is sweet, lots of dark fruit, sweet summer berry, jammy, earthy, ashy roast, cooking chocolate and salted liquorice. The taste is bitter, tangy, roasted malts, quite spicy, Jamaican gingerbread, cherry cola, earthy roast, umami, soy sauce, marmite, earthy wood and berry skin with a dry, earthy, ashy finish. Medium body and high carbonation. A bit messy. One of the poorer versions of FES.

Bottle at home, thanks to my Wingmane for the country rake, 24/06/16. Clear golden with a well appointed off white head - a decent looking bier. Nose is pale malts, grain, corn husk, faint citric elements, light bread. Taste comprises toasted grain, barleycorn, light malt, biscuit notes, touch of caramel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough pale lager, not too sweet or papery, Cm’on bier xnobes - no need to knock this one so!

Scopey’s grand vertical. Thanks to WIngman for this African rarity. Almost clear paleish gold beer, tidy white head. Light crispy palate, mildly dry. Light papery malts. Mild floralness. A whisper of lemony hop saves this from really bombing. Dry finish.

Bottle a little bit out of date.... big thanks to Willis. It pours clear pale yellow with a small, bubbly white head. The aroma is sweet and papery, grass, weed and straw. The taste is sweet, paper, white sugar, straw, cheap white bread and soda water with short finish. Light body and fine, foamy carbonation. Basic papery lager. Not great....
