One pint bottle picked up in Wisconsin - I think there are ratings for multiple versions of this beer under this entry - for example, previous ratings mention.cherries and barrel-aging - these are clearly not the case with this bottle in front of me - anyway - lightly hazy light ruby - thick, soapy lace - nose is fairly sweet, but has inviting, complex aromatics - raisin, fig, date, treacle, clove, light pepper, cinnamon - low carbonation, watery texture - flavor is a let down given the aroma - very sweet, with a lot of alcohol presence (not just the heat, but the actual flavor of the alcohol) - moderate bitterness - some raisin, treacle - just a hot, sweet mess that almost tastes like someone dumped cheap vodka into a lower abv beer.

Sample at Daily Growler UA. The beer is a hazy dark amber/copper color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon and caramel. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, oaky bourbon and fruit. The finish is oaky with a caramel and bourbon aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours black with a half finger of tan head. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate and a little caramel. Taste is light bitter and follows aroma. Mostly coffee and dark chocolate. Medium bodied with a thin and watery texture. Soft carbonation and a decently long finish. Good beer, but the mouthfeel is off.

Firkin Fest 2014. I really liked the smoke, and there is a good amount of it. There is an underlying malt sweetness that works with this beer.

Cloudy yellow, loose weak head dies quickly. As expected. The aroma is malty with sort of a yoghurt tang. Sweet up front...the yeast is a bit footy/stale tasting and then the tartness comes in a bit late. Ok for style.

It poured from a bottle beautifully! Big and black with a head that is 5 inches and never ending rocky. It even bubbles all round the spot under the head. Taste is oddly bitter but I thought this was just going to be a yellow beer! My, I can’t quit talking about how good it looks. On the palate its a woody burnt thing. Perhaps a little more bitter than I care for. The head mutes a rather roasty aroma. Even tho it foams all over the place, this stuff is rather flat. Not sure where the juniper thing comes in, perhaps on the odd bitterness?
