Description
Kompaan had humble beginnings, with just a few recipes and a whole lot of gusto. The brewery was founded by Jeroen and Jasper, two school friends that have known each other longer than not. They shared a zest for life and were ready to put The Hague on the craft beer map. The brewery name is based on this friendship, two companions drinking together. As a modern, young brewery making contemporary, exciting beers, the name is spelt in modern Dutch, as “kompaan”, and not “compaen”.

From the sterk, Amsterdam, it is a classical double ipa, robust, warm alcool, sweet, hoppy, some plum, the kind of beer to finish a night, 30.05.18.

44cL can. Pours black with a beige head. Roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate on the nose. Flavour has lots of roasted malts as a base, moderately dry, a good layer of coffee, and some dark chocolate. Nice mouthfeel, fairly silky with moderate carbonation. I suppose the contituent components could be stronger, but the beer is nice and roasty coffee imperial stout.

0.33 l can from 'Mr. Hop', best before November 2025. Hazy, pale greenish yellow with a medium large, frothy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, quite fruity-floral and a little dank aroma of pineapple, passion fruit and some gooseberry with a touch of corn flakes. Gently sweet, moderately bitter, quite fruity-floral and minimally dank taste of pineapple, passion fruit, gooseberry, some oats and traces of corn flakes, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly dry finish. Thin to medium body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, very soft carbonation. Decent NAIPA, very well-balanced and quite refreshing.

Can. Mildly hazy amber beer, good pale tan head. Smooth airy palate, mildly dry, decent fine minerally carbonation on the back end. Caramel and cream - light smooth malts, mildly sweet. Good gin barreling. The gin is obvious on the nose and the taste. Bright botanicals and a little zest. The mild bitterness of the botanicals and the zesty brightness are nice offsets for the sweet malt base. Light, semi dry and crispy finish. Enjoyed this. An easy drinking barleywine. It's one flaw and, it's a significant one, is the lack of malt depth. Brew a good barleywine chaps and, then stick in a gin barrel. Very good, coulda been great.
