Description

Bottle from Brussels Beer Box. One of these postmodern, decidedly non-Belgian micro breweries that have followed BBP's shining example in Brussels - this time presenting an English style bitter, at least according to this site, because none of this is to be found on the label; if true, this is only the third Belgian attempt at a thoroughly English beer style I have encountered so far. Membranously lacing, egg-white, very moussy and dense head, irregularly shaped and quickly dissipating in the middle, but very well-retaining around the edge: immediately misty peach blonde robe with ochre-ish hue, becoming all (too) milky and murky with sediment. Aroma of lemon blossom, stale old lime juice, hand soap, gasoline, green apples, buttercups, soggy white bread, sulfuric egg yolk, minerals, hints of chalk, unripe banana, butter (diacetyl, most likely), raw cauliflower, parsnip, wet paper. Fruity onset in a very clean, indeed English kind of way, hinting at hard green pear, unripe peach and green banana, restrainedly sweetish, tad sourish, straightforward but enlivened by mineral-flavouring, yet still not harsh, medium-dosed carbonation; supple, bit soapy mouthfeel, feeling fuller than the mere 3% ABV would suggest. Cereally and white bready maltiness in the middle, rounded with soapy assocations, like industrial white bread made soggy with water; lemon rind-like hoppy aspect appear early on, but remain patient till the very end to deposit their bitterness on the tongue's surface - in a gentle, soft, mild way, with very floral (buttercups again!) impressions retronasally. All the while, a buttery diacetyl flavour persists, as well as an egg yolk-like sulfuric aspect; the hops retain their spicy bittering powers, but as said, remain mild and gentle. Ends buttery, bittering and mildly aromatic, but above all very quenching. Very correct and technically flawless, ultra-modern, un-Belgian and 'internationalized' session ale, the very type of beer these new Brussels micro breweries focus on - this one fits very well into what I have recently come to expect from the Brussels avant-garde. As for style: generally feels more like a 'grisette' or something along those lines, with English golden ale influences - but it has little to do with the proud tradition of cask-conditioned English bitters. That said, I am drinking this from a bottle, so if anything, a beer intended this way should reach consumers from a traditional English cask system. Which is all but non-existent in Belgium - hence the complete pointlessness of creating such a beer in this country... Still, style considerations aside, a pleasant enough, trendy and up-to-date session ale I could probably drink all night when going out in our much-maligned capital.

Draft @ Moeder Fontainas.
