Draft. Dark mahogony beer with a thin off-white head. Rich toffee and sweet malt aroma. Rich toffee flavor with lots of caramel and malt. Some hop presence, and just a bit of fruitiness. Full bodied with a nice velvety mouthfeel.

Draft. Rich mahogony color with a big beige head. Sweet malt aroma with some alcohol - nothing too overpowering. Rich texture. Sweet malt flavor with some caramel, brown sugar, a bit of stone fruit (plums) and lots of hops (but even though it’s 95 IBU’s, the hops fit very nicelt and don’t overpower). Hides alcohol well.

Draught at the brewpub. Hazy nut brown, small head. Roasty and yeasty, Sweet with clean, but mellow and syrupy mouthfeel. Some resiny hoppiness finishes this unrefined ale off.

Draught at the brewpub. Black with creamy nitrogen fuelled head. Dry and very roasty. Notes of of coffee and licorice. Very Irish in style, but with more life than in Guinness & Co these days. Medium bitterness.

Bottled. Lightly hazy, dark amber. Peaty calvados aroma. Dryish with surprisingly slender body. Lots of toffeeish malt. The flavours are unusual - prickly pears with islay whiskey and vanilla. Amazingly intense. A beer that stood out amidst many other crazy beers in a crazy tasting session.

Draft. Clear reddish amber beer with a big off-white head. Spicey/floral/malty flavor with some earthiness. Spicey aroma thats slightly metallic (but not in a bad way). Easy to drink. Typical steam beer components.

2004 bottling Beautiful red-brown beer; good yellow-brown, slightly irregular head. Cookies nose, soft gingerbread, caramel, fresh American hops, pineapple aroma. Nearly adstringent hopstaste, takes a while to dissipate, leaving space for a sweet(er) cake/gingerbread taste: the grapey character of the hops + the dark malts lending it a kind of chocolate + raisins flavour, or even chocolatecake filled with raisins and orangezest. Pimm’s anyone? Very well-bodied, filling, chewy even, and a typical B.W. velvety smoothness: the velvet glove around the iron fist. Nice, typical US interpretation of a good B.W. It’s not an everyday drink, but once in a while , such as this can be enormously satisfying. Good one, thanks Shaun.

1 yr. old. Shaun tells me it is called 2-1-A IPA these days - thanks, Shaun! Clear orange beer; orange-pinkish head. Very fruity nose; grapefruit, nectarine, peach - all of these in the hop varieties. Beautiful - bitterish though not overextended - aromatic as grapefruit, and yet there’s malt underneath, and discernible. Balance more than OK. Slick, hop-oily MF, slight burning sensation. Great West-Coast IPA. Sorry, I’m a s*cker for the stuff.

1.5 year old bottling Stupendous huge, white head; hazy peach coloured beer. Coriander nose (and lots of it), hops, bit of cookie malts. There’s coriander in it, and in copious amounts, rest is typical candi sugar dryness, with a little extra aroma, reminding me of rosehips. Very full bodied, slick MF. Why do Americans think Belgian beer = coriander?

Tap. Dark clear brown. with a salty gravy/soy sauce aroma. Sweet choclate and moka in taste, but lacks hops. Lighter bodied. (June 2004).
