16oz can. Quite cloudy golden tan body, missing the Helles part of Helles. Mild smoke, some off tones in the aroma. Potentially two years old bought directly from the brewery. Disappointing.

I don't know if this has cherry in it. Really big barrel notes, but reasonable ABV. Perhaps it does have cherries in it because there is a Rodenbach-ish tone, or that is just infection. Tasty, but perhaps not my best choice off menu.

Tap at the brewery. Solid beer. Crackery malts, pleasantly dry classical hop tone. Sort of rich for the style. Bready. Good.

12 ounce can from Binny’s River Grove, 9/22/22. New brewery! Brewery #2101, USA #1704, Illinois #77. Dark brown, medium brown head, average retention. Aroma of roast, coffee, nuts. Taste is chocolate, roast, soy, nuts. Tad bit thin. Not very rugged. Okay.

Taster at Rotary GroveFest, June 2019. A smoked beer? Maybe an off choice for the middle of a heat wave, but how often do we find one of these on tap locally? Lovely smoked, dark color. A nose that's more malty than smoky. A bit of cherry wood to it, and raisin. Not a Bamberg smoked ham, but a retro smoked malt goodie.

Sampled from the tap at Navigator Taproom. Pours a hazy earthy yellow gold with a white head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has earthy tart strawberry with a touch of rhubarb and an earthy wheat backbone. Flavor has a combination of earthy strawberry and rhubarb with a wheat backbone.

From bottle: The beer pours nice and dark. Black, to all intents and purposes. The smell is pleasantly roasty, with dark coffee and a bit of cocoa in the back. The taste is a little, dare I say it, scorched. Just because of its dark roast malt. This overrides the malt sweetness. There is more coffee roast in the palate. Hop bitterness is there mainly to keep the malts from getting too syrupy, and add to the overall bitter coffee impression. This is a solid, strongly flavored beer, but at 5.9% it's not overly alcoholic. Should pair well with beef or ham during holiday dinners.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered brown-burgundy body. Thin off-white head fades away. A pretty enjoyable offering, the cherry works really well . Really nails it for a US Dubbel, Doesn’t have the Belgo effervescence, but has a really great flavor profile. Lots of depth. Drinkable for the style and ABV. Sublime. Solid.

12oz bottle. A big, deep, rich, full bodied Smoked Strong Ale. Drinks big, more similarities to a Barleywine than to a Schlenkerla or Spezial smoked beer. Not that impressive of a final product. Once again, floaties. Has what seems to me like mild infection issues too. Probably more enjoyable on tap.
