The Firehouse Brewing Company, South Dakota’s first brew pub, is the creation of a group of Rapid City locals who developed the idea of creating an onsite microbrewery after frequenting one of Denver’s downtown pubs. The idea was to return the building’s interior to its original fire-hall glory with the added feature of a brewery visible from behind glass enclosures. The new decor included polished brass and fire fighting equipment to adorn the walls, the bar, and even the ceiling. The Group of partners walked in the door on the evening of September 3, 1991 with sledge hammers and crow bars in hand. The project, now a part of history, was completed 93 days later.
The Firehouse Brewing Company opened its doors to an eager throng of patrons on December 5th, 1991. Today the Firehouse is a favorite with locals and tourists alike and features a brewery, an indoor restaurant and bar, an outdoor patio complete with band-shell for live music, a winery a mercantile, and sports bar.

Relatively light golden and mellow straw coloured body with a faint, but noticeable pure white head, only a half centimetre tall or so. Aroma of grass, light malt and perhaps the tiniest bit of hops, but those could have been coming off as a dry-hop scent from my IPA a few inches away. Light-bodied; Crisp malty notes dominate with a touch of grain and more pronounced yeast elements along with a dash of bread and a faint bit of sweetness as well. Aftertaste is crisp and very balanced with some sweetness, a light kick of floral and grassy hops noticeable and mostly a bready, yeastie and heavy malt bite towards the end that swings in that direction. Overall, a good enough, but slightly off-balanced beer that shows much more malt and especially yeast/bread than anything else, but does have some other flavours. I sampled this four ounce pour on draught, as part of the full nine-beer lineup sampling, from the brewpub/brewery in Rapid City, South Dakota, just hours after landing in the state [for the first time, ever] on 25-June-2020 for US$12,25 (for all nine beers!).

Crisp copper and bronze coloured body with a light off-white and tan head along with a bit of larger bubbles rising from the bottom. Aroma of noticeable alpha acids and hops! While this shouldn't be surprising, from this brewpub, I was surprised by that! Aroma also included some citrus fruit, more pine and malt notes and a touch of perfume towards the end. Medium-bodied; Nice balance of malt and hops here and yes, the hops here are seemingly fresh and seem more from the Pacific NorthWest and range from citrus to pine and a dash of perfumey and lightly floral elements, all with a nice malt balance. Aftertaste has a touch of light sweetness from resin and honey with the majority of the flavours come from the piney and citrusey hops which show well at the end. Overall, a nice beer and easily the best beer from the BrewPub and the only one that I'd get again. Dark brown coloured body with a hint of a light opacity, showing perhaps about 20 per cent, with the majority being clear, all again, with no real head - this time a sliver of an off-white glow. Aroma of roasted malts, light coffee and caramelised sugars and that's about it. Light to Medium-bodied; Very strong malty notes dominate at first and then give way to an almost bready yeast quality with some nuts to add to the texture and body of this and a little dose of hops as well along with a nice hint of coffee towards the end, but no chocolate or complete roastiness in this one. Aftertaste is clean, but slightly malty along with a good hit of caramelised sugars as well. Overall, a decent beer, in the top half of the beers here, but not something to be proud of. Deep, very dark brown coloured body, almost the colour of a soda, without any opacity and not even a sliver of a white head on top - this looks nice and perhaps a bit dark for the style, but welcoming. Aroma of light toasted and almost roasted malts, some very light and noticeable nuts and earthiness with a bit of a rustic, almost 'dirty' scent. Light-bodied; Sharp funky biscuity and grainy malt flavours dominate with some light caramelised sugars showing near the front, but ending with some nuts, earth and a good dose of the funky lager yeasts. Aftertaste shows some softer grain and a healthy complement of sugars with caramel and a bit from nuts comes through as well. Overall, has a good deal of flavour considering the other options from the brewpub and stays relatively true to the style. One of the better (and we're not saying much) beers from the brewpub here. Deeper copper coloured body with a faint glimmer of actual ruby and red tints towards the bottom, but also some browner notes as well, all without much head at all - not really anything. Aroma of very subtle, stale malts with some toast and grain on the nose, but that's about it. Light-bodied; Sharp malty notes show the stale malt and a dash of very subtle hops come through as well, but not much exciting and a funky dose of yeast and bread as well. Aftertaste has the stale malt flavour again with this time something else different at least - some nuts and earthiness, but again, on the bad side of things. Overall, a pretty bad beer, even for the style and while there wasn't much to enjoy about this one, at least it had the name of the brewpub in the title. Again, I wouldn't get this one as a full pint, but a sampler at least was palatable.
