The Firehouse Brewing Company, South Dakota’s first brew pub, is the creation of a group of Rapid City locals who developed the idea of creating an onsite microbrewery after frequenting one of Denver’s downtown pubs. The idea was to return the building’s interior to its original fire-hall glory with the added feature of a brewery visible from behind glass enclosures. The new decor included polished brass and fire fighting equipment to adorn the walls, the bar, and even the ceiling. The Group of partners walked in the door on the evening of September 3, 1991 with sledge hammers and crow bars in hand. The project, now a part of history, was completed 93 days later.
The Firehouse Brewing Company opened its doors to an eager throng of patrons on December 5th, 1991. Today the Firehouse is a favorite with locals and tourists alike and features a brewery, an indoor restaurant and bar, an outdoor patio complete with band-shell for live music, a winery a mercantile, and sports bar.

Copper and perhaps bronze coloured body with a sliver of an off-white and tan head. Aroma of toasted malt, light biscuits, grass and some very subtle caramelisled sugars - not much going on in the nose, but more than some of the others from the brewpub. Light to barely Medium-bodied; Very thin toasted malt profile shows through at first with some herbal notes and a dash of the caramelised sugars along with some toffee and even some raisin notes come through, but again, this is lacking quite a bit in flavour. Aftertaste shows some grass, toasted malt, grain and a dash of caramelised sugar notes. Overall, a pretty poor offering again, but this is at least a bit more flavourful (at least from the malt notes) than some of the others and was still decent enough to try, but I wouldn't get a full pint of this one at all. I sampled this four ounce pour on draught, as part of the full nine-beer lineup sampling, from the brewpub/brewery in Rapid City, South Dakota, just hours after landing in the state [for the first time, ever] on 25-June-2020 for US$12,25 (for all nine beers!).

Deeper dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, just off-white head, about a centimetre tall and a fairly clear brown glow, nothing opaque at all about this, not oily and not showing much depth in the look. Aroma of roasted and toasted malts with a little dash of lactose and caramelised sugars, but that's about it. Light-bodied; Fresh roasted malt flavours dominate with somet oatmeal and fresh yeast notes along with a bready dash towards the end and some crisp sweetness from caramel and toffee. Aftertaste is rich with some roasted malts, cream and a hit of oatmeal, all while being fairly-easy-drinking. Overall, a decent mild (I style that I really like) with some small malt notes and a bit more from the sugar and lactose department, but still easy-drinking but a good amount of flavour. One of the better beers from the brewpub on my visit at least. Crisp copper coloured body with a deep bronze glow and almost no head at all, perhaps a centimetre tall. Aroma of light European hops or ones without much alpha acids at all, some very light cardboardie malt notes and a dash of caramelised sugars. Light to Medium-bodied; Strongish malty and cardboard notes dominate at first with some stale toffee and caramelised sugars as well with some raisins and figs noticeable along with a dash of yeast and crisp toasted grain notes at the end. Aftertaste is fairly malt-forward without much else from hops, sugars or anything else, but there is a hint of the light alcohol, although relatively mild. Overall, a decent enough beer without much flavour aside from the malt. Decent to try, but worth passing up of course, if you are only in the market for one or so beers total. Crisp, pure golden coloured body with a faint just off-white head, barely a centimetre or so tall that fades fairly quickly. Aroma of just about nothing with some water, very light malts, a dash of biscuits and grain and no hops or anything to speak of, perhaps some artificial sugars. Ultra light-bodied; Nutty-ish malts show at first with some grain and biscuity notes alnog with a dash of very light hops which weren't noticeable before in the nose, but that's about it - fairly mild throughout. Aftertaste shows the grain, malt and little else, perhaps some bitter and assertive grassy notes. Overall, a pretty poor beer without much flavour at all, but that was expected from a few of these beers. Not really worth grabbing here of course, unless, like me, you sample the entire nine-beer lineup as samplers!
