Bottle from Ray’s, Wauwatosa, WI From my WI visit, glad to be finally done with samples from this brewer. Still, pours a deep brown body with red highlights, a proper stout tan head. Smell is of coffee malt, a little caramel sweetness. Even has a bit of alcohol nose. Taste is closer to standard stout, some astringent roast harshness, but also a bit rich in flavor. Sweetness is not obtrusive, balanced by earthy English hops. Best of the Horny Goat beers I’ve found. This may chance if & when they start brewing their own.

12 oz. bottle, $1.50 loose at Woodman’s. Gave this a good pour to make it kick out some hops, and got a standard orange pale ale color, with a few what I hope are hop particles floating around. Foam is properly rocky at first, but settles to the standard fizzy head with no lace. Hop smell is not very strong, but some sweet malt nose is noted. Major component in taste is the malt: sweetness is up a bit with caramel notes. But hops are simply barely there. Sipping bring some alcohol to the nose, but there’s also a bit of a watery mouthfeel. While I’ve found this brand is barely standard, I’d have hoped they’d try to step up their game with a hoppy style that would draw in beer geeks. But it’s not to be.

12oz. bottle from Woodman’s, $1.50 loose. I spotted the layer of yeast in the bottle, so carefully poured into the glass. Lots of bubbles, slightly fizzy and puffy head, golden color. Smell does have a little more zest than I’d expected, frankly. But the taste runs a bit below standard. I taste raw wheat grains, not much else. Slightly yeasty, which is understandable, but also a bit rubbery. This could sure have used some hops, some more malts. Something.

12oz bottle. Unfiltered cloudy orange brown. Thin off-white head. Sugary aroma, some banana hefe action, but also some pungent harshness. Hmm..kind of awkward, the sweetness and the body are just so artificial compared to an authentic German version. An interesting mixture of flavors for sure, original I suppose. The smokiness is not pronounced, but certainly adds into the equation. Lacks subtlety and depth, but an interesting offering from the ever-shitty Stevens Point facility.

12 oz. bottle. $1.50 loose @ Woodman’s. So where’s this can they keep talking about? Well, poured a deep yellow with red tinges before the yeast at the bottom slipped in. Head dissipates quickly. Slightly tart and lemony smell. Taste kind of just sits there. It’s not bad, but why put your own name on this "product?"

Draft at Yester Years, West Allis, WI. Looks more like a cloudy amber. There’s a thin draft head in the shaker glass. A decent amber smell but with a note of salt, as my nose reads it. The server immediately assured me they do clean their lines regularly. Taste is nice, though. A basic amber with no surprises, except for a slight fruitiness, perhaps from a warmer ferment. A sharp hop tickle on the sides of my tongue. Raspberry notes give it more of a blonde ale character.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark caramel-amber color with a small beige head that produced a little lacing. The aroma was lightly nutty and malty with a faint hint of fruit. The flavor was bitter, tangy, malty and nutty with faint fruit underneath. The finish was medium length with a mild bit of caramel and fruit lingering. Medium body. Ok.

Bottle. Deep brown body with read highlights. Frothy, tan head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, mild coffee and roasted malt. The flavor is lightly bitter and lightly to moderately sweet. It finishes lightly to moderately bitter and lightly sweet. Medium body, slick, thick texture, lively carbonation. The finish leaves a lot to be desired. Very watery with a lingering burnt taste that is slightly metallic. Milk stout? Where’s the sweet finish?
