Description
One of the oldest breweries in Wisconsin, Potosi started in 1852 to quench the thirsts of local miners. Ownership of the brewery changed hands several times and Potosi was fortunate to survive the Prohibition era. The Brewery eventually closed in 1972 due to swiftly changing market conditions.

In 1980, the brewery buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1995 local artist and woodworker Gary David and his cousin Denis David bought the brewery buildings for the cost of back taxes with the goal of restoring them.

Five years later in 2000, renovation efforts expanded to involve the entire community with the establishment of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Potosi Brewery Foundation, modeled after the philanthropic Newman’s Own Foundation.
In 2004, the Potosi Brewery Foundation received a major boost to its redevelopment efforts when the brewery was chosen by the American Breweriana Association (ABA), an organization of beer historians, collectors, and preservationists, to be the home of the National Brewery Museum.
2008 was the year the beer started flowing again largely in part to the local volunteers supporting the brewery’s business model, noting that “the organization is volunteer-driven and it would not likely have the impact it has had without those efforts.”

In 2015 Potosi opened its new state-of-the-art production facility and unveiled its new branding that both celebrates Potosi's past and looks boldly towards the future.

On tap at Old Fashioned in Madison. Pours a bright orange with some lacing white head. Nose is very juicy, tangerine, orange, some white grape, a little candy. Flavor is the same, extremely juicy, orange, tangerine, a little blood orange, some honey, candy. Slick finish. It was perfect with brunch.

Bottle from atom as a trade extra which I appreciate since I have new found vigor for trying new breweries. Light copper pour with grainy nose. Tastes grainy, earth bitters, light pepper, and tea. Stale palate. Reminds me of the Polotmavy I’ve been seeking.

On tap. Pours a hazy amber/ruby in appearance. Aroma is caramel malt and dank woodsy pine. Taste is sweet with all that malt (a supporting role?). Prob too much imho, as the hop profile seems a bit off. Pine, citrus, and caramel with a lingering bitterness. Too sweet for me, but a nice effort by Potosi nonetheless.

12oz bottle brought back from the Midwest. Poured a clear golden yellow color with a small white head. Aroma was notes of biscuit, malt, some light earthy hops. Flavor was crisp lagered beer - sweet malts. Pretty good, easy to drink and despite it being a bit high, sessionable.

Bottle. Corn/barley malt and hay aroma. Golden yellow with small head. Sweet corn/barley malt, hay and lightly bitter herbal flavor. Decent body. More like a mediocre pale lager.

Tap at OF. Deep brown-black body. Foamy, patchy beige head. Big chocolate booze. Chewy bourbon candy tones. Full and heavy, relatively one-dimensional. Big brown chocolate barrel action. Rich and heavy. Good, but not great.

On tap at Potosi. Thick opaque chalky black body. Steady beige head. Minty, hoppy, true to style aroma. Rich specialty malts, thick mouthfeel. Surprisingly well done, very fresh and flavorful. Pretty much nails it. Roasty.

Tap at Potosi. Orange-brown unfiltered body. Big steady off-white head. A pretty respectable BW, lots of malt sweetness, piny hops. Pretty well balanced. Not harsh, very drinkable..leaning into English BW territory. Fruity ale yeast tones. Nice.

Tap at Old Fashioned. Deep brown-black, burgundy. Steady beige head. Sweet, sugary, with some mild dark fruit tones. The sweetness really hits you. Has roasty Stout tones almost..very chocolate forward. Certainly doesn’t nail the style, but it is an interesting beverage. Too sugary. 6-4-6-3-12.............Had this one again at the brewery..Brown Black body, thin off-white head. Mellow chocolate aroma. Pretty nice offering, doughy. Cleanish, not much of the pungent yeast...more chocolate toffee. Malty. No real alcohol tones. A nice, easy drinker, full and rich, but easy and well executed.
