Description
One of the oldest breweries in Wisconsin, Potosi started in 1852 to quench the thirsts of local miners. Ownership of the brewery changed hands several times and Potosi was fortunate to survive the Prohibition era. The Brewery eventually closed in 1972 due to swiftly changing market conditions.
In 1980, the brewery buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1995 local artist and woodworker Gary David and his cousin Denis David bought the brewery buildings for the cost of back taxes with the goal of restoring them.
Five years later in 2000, renovation efforts expanded to involve the entire community with the establishment of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Potosi Brewery Foundation, modeled after the philanthropic Newman’s Own Foundation.
In 2004, the Potosi Brewery Foundation received a major boost to its redevelopment efforts when the brewery was chosen by the American Breweriana Association (ABA), an organization of beer historians, collectors, and preservationists, to be the home of the National Brewery Museum.
2008 was the year the beer started flowing again largely in part to the local volunteers supporting the brewery’s business model, noting that “the organization is volunteer-driven and it would not likely have the impact it has had without those efforts.”
In 2015 Potosi opened its new state-of-the-art production facility and unveiled its new branding that both celebrates Potosi's past and looks boldly towards the future.

Tap at Jacs. Filtered looking orange-amber body. Foamy off-white head. Fruity, syrupy aroma. Odd malty tones like the added extract to get the ABV up...which was 10%, not 7%. Amateur hour IIPA. Toffee sugary tones kill it.

On tap at Monk’s Pub, Chicago. Healthy looking reddish brown body with a thin head. At this strength, that’s no surprise. Thankfully this has not been overloaded with pumpkin pie spice. Instead, there’s a mild spice that makes way for some warming alcohol notes. Comes across like a Belgian dubbel with just a bit of horseblanket. Taste is pretty malty. If they say it’s got "carmelized" baked pumpkin, then the squash may be adding to the fermentables. Result is a nice, warming beer with some thick body and full flavor. Spices do come in at the end to show support.

12oz bottle poured into a Jolly Pumpkin & Maui Brewing Sobrehumano tulip. Pours a ruby brown with a small head that fades quickly. Too dark to see through the beer. Aroma is strong with uncontrolled Belgian yeast esters (sweet rotten pear) and some mild earthiness trying to take the edge off the crazy sweet candy esters. Flavor is a bit more doable with slightly subdued esters that come off more like very ripe pear mixed with estery caramel. Has a bit of a spritzy finish, again to take the edge off the beer. Bottom line: another American beer that doesn’t know what to do with a Belgian yeast, particularly for a dubbel.

Tap at Old Fashioned. Unfiltered glowing orange-red body. Frothy orange-beige head. Has a nice pumpkin flavor, but a touch of astringency doesn’t help. Leans into the sweetness a little, you’d like to see some more refined malt tones. The aroma is kind of pungent, cheap. Not bad, but not one I’d revisit.

12 bottle. Nice ruby-brown, unfiltered body. Thin, glass rimming beige head. Really pleasant, pulls it off rather well. Pronounced yeast tones..raisin, plum...balanced and complemented by the chocolate malt, maybe candi sugar tones. At 7.5% it’s not overbearing, which really works well here. Drinkable, and while sweet and full bodied, remains balanced and refreshing.

From a 3 oz taster served at the Old Fashiioned in Madison WI. Pours a cloudy dark gold with an off white head. Fruity hop aroma. Tangerine flavors dominate but hop flavors are strong. Bitter finish.

Draft. Decent brew. The tangerine comes through a lot more in the taste than the aroma. Drinkable and enjoyable, but nothing to really seek out.
