Description
One of the oldest breweries in Wisconsin, Potosi started in 1852 to quench the thirsts of local miners. Ownership of the brewery changed hands several times and Potosi was fortunate to survive the Prohibition era. The Brewery eventually closed in 1972 due to swiftly changing market conditions.

In 1980, the brewery buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1995 local artist and woodworker Gary David and his cousin Denis David bought the brewery buildings for the cost of back taxes with the goal of restoring them.

Five years later in 2000, renovation efforts expanded to involve the entire community with the establishment of the 501(c)(3) non-profit Potosi Brewery Foundation, modeled after the philanthropic Newman’s Own Foundation.
In 2004, the Potosi Brewery Foundation received a major boost to its redevelopment efforts when the brewery was chosen by the American Breweriana Association (ABA), an organization of beer historians, collectors, and preservationists, to be the home of the National Brewery Museum.
2008 was the year the beer started flowing again largely in part to the local volunteers supporting the brewery’s business model, noting that “the organization is volunteer-driven and it would not likely have the impact it has had without those efforts.”

In 2015 Potosi opened its new state-of-the-art production facility and unveiled its new branding that both celebrates Potosi's past and looks boldly towards the future.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2016 vintage. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, biscuit, roasted nuts, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, date, smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malts, whiskey barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, biscuit, roasted nuts, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, raisin, prune, fig, date, smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, roast, char bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, whiskey, coconut, toasted oak, biscuit, roasted nuts, dark/brown bread/crust, molasses, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast/roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, whiskey barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome roast/hop bitter/sweet, and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and whiskey/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel that is fantastic. Mildly increasing warmth of 10.5%, with zero lingering barrel booziness after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged imperial stout. All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malts, whiskey barrels, and light earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Fantastic soft/silky feel. A touch thin for the ABV, but the silkiness made up for it. Amazing balance of rich malts, and whiskey barrel presence/integration. Solid earthy hops and restrained fruity yeast. Not overly sweet from lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example. Age probably improved this one looking at the other reviews.

The Aromas are dark malt, black patent, leather, and a little Coco and tree bark. Flavors are like nose, on the sweet side with some coffee, bitterness, and hints of whiskey in the Finish what are you. Good body and carbonation. Barely drinkable for the strength. Nice beer. From a 2018 bottling.

The main thing about this beer is that it's dark and sweet. Aromas are dark malts caramel and a hint of bourbon. Flavors are like nose, again very sweet okay carbonation that did help cut the sweetness.
