Description
After years of hobby brewing and an increasingly ardent interest in brewing as a profession — including countless brewery tours and immersion in local and online brewing interest groups — John Martin and fellow home brewer and co-founder Ken Broadhead launched Confluence Brewing in 2012. John left his construction management day-job to pursue Confluence and his passion for beer making full time.

The brewery is itself a confluence of John and Ken’s love for Iowa and craft beer. The result is a microbrewery that shares Iowa’s attributes of honesty, humility, hard work and a sense of humor. Confluence also has Iowa’s knack for being a delightful surprise to those who actually experience it.

Confluence cares about the creativity and craftsmanship that goes into making excellent beer, and knows that excellent beer can bring good friends together.

Keg on the RBWG 2013 Bus. Pours dark brown with a creamy, tan head. Dark bread in the nose, grapes, pine. Medium sweet flavor with standard dark malts, light roast, juicy grapefruit. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately earthy to finish with some ripened citrus fruits, mellow roast, toasted pine. Very drinkable, if a bit simple.

Location: Growler at Paul's Blind Impy Stout Tasting, 1/5/13

Aroma: This one has a fresh, hoppy nose, pine, resin, citrus, and some roasted malts too
Appearance: It pours a brown color with a small beige head and some sticky lace on the glass
Flavor: Nice taste, it isn't quite as nice as the nose, but similar component-wise, with roast and hops
Palate: The body of this beer is medium-plus, with a smooth feel, and a lot of drinkability
Overall Impression: Awesome share, thanks to jcwattsrugger for this one! I had no idea what to expect, but I really enjoyed this one. This is right on what I'm looking for in a Black IPA, and if I'm ever Des Moines I'll have to make an effort to swing by Confluence.
