Description
As of 5/24/25 Wasatch Brewery beers will no longer be brewed in Utah. They will be brewed in the Monster Brewing network.

“Where’s the beer? Where are the breweries?” Those were among the first thoughts Greg Schirf had after moving to Utah from Milwaukee in the early 80’s. Incredibly, drinking and brewing were all but forbidden. Greg took matters into his own hands and did what any self-respecting midwesterner would do: He started a brewery. Wasatch was the very first brewery in Utah – and one of the first craft brewers in all of the U.S. – brewing award-winning brews since 1986.

In 1988, Greg Schirf proposed another bill to the Utah Legislature making brewpubs legal in Utah and opened the first brewpub at the top of historic Main Street in the resort town of Park City. Wasatch continues to misbehave, turning out naughty beer after naughty beer year after year.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange brown, thin beige head. Deep malty aroma, true to style, very nice. Big doughy Doppelbock, I’m diggin it. Malty, but not overloaded in thick specialty malts, lets the subtle yeast tones shine. Big caramel body. Solidly executed, an impressive offering.

12oz bottle. Pale yellow-tan, hazy. Thin soapy head. The aroma is a touch off, a little corny/grainy. Medium to full bodied, a little stronger than a typical Wit. Spicy orange peel, coriander bite up front. Smooth vanilla toned malty finish. OK, better than most US examples.

7oz bottle. Filtered yellow orange, creamy off-white head. Rather off butttery, grainy, putrid aroma. Assumably quite infected, this is a pretty piss poor product. Sort of like BMC without quality control. Corny, grainy, buttery. Sub par all the way.

Bottle at Freakin’ Frog in Las Vegas. The beer is a murky mahogany color with a medium tan head that dissipates steadily to an outer ring. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel, molasses and dark malt. Medium body with flavors of earthy malt, caramel and dark fruit. Faint hops in the background. The finish is sweet and malty with a ripe fruit aftertaste. Decent overall.

I had a delay during my layover in Salt Lake City so I wandered into Wasatch brew pub. Since I was pretty hungover from GABF the night before i went with this Hefe in loo of the porter, which would be normal choice. Anyways it pours hazy yellow, and is yeasty, fresh and tastes of bananas. Very pleasant beer from a place I wouldn’t expect.
