Description

In April/May 2021 Brouwerij Breugem ended its relationship with Brouwerij Hoop and moved to a new location back in Zaandam. A re-branding was implemented in October 2021, and a number of beers were given new names. Breugem Brewery will also continue as Breugem Bier. For the past few years, Breugem has been a client brewer at Brouwerij Jopen in Haarlem.

In 2023, Brouwerij De Prael Amsterdam Houthavens was taken over, making the dream of having its own brewery and tasting room come true. Part of the production continues to be brewed at Jopen Bier.

Weird aroma of malt, coconut, exotic herbs, lavender, wood, spicy, lots of vanilla, raisins, mint. Flavour is rather sweet, a bit sticky, with a light bittersweet finish. Well, this admittedly interesting beer is way too herbal and sweet for my taste. I’m glad to have ’experienced’ it though, can’t say it’s generic.

Bottle at home. Aroma of citrus, spicy yeast, juniper berries, peppery notes, lemongrass, spicy notes, hint of hops. Flavour is light sweet with an equally light bitter finish. Body is light to medium with a strong carbonation. Refreshing and aromatic Saison.

Bottle at De Stomme van Campen, Kampen. Aroma is bready malt, sweetish fruits, apricot, some caramel, touch of orange, light hoppy. Did I detect a hint of Brett funk in there? Flavour is above moderate sweet with a little bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied. Fairly mild on all fronts but certainly enjoyable.

0.33 l bottle from 'Sterk Avondverkoop', best before April 2026. Slightly hazy, very dark ruby with a medium large, frothy, almost stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, gently yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity aroma of caramel, overripe banana, some clove and cherry. Gently sweet, malty, moderately bitter, quite yeasty-spicy and slightly fruity taste of caramel, overripe banana, clove, marzipan and light raisins, followed by a short, moderately bitter, slightly chalky finish. Medium to full body, gently effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Decent, but not great.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is spicy with a subtle peppery tingle that I would have liked to be more strongly present. Malt, yeast, some herbal notes, touch of ripe fruit. Flavour is moderate to medium sweet and light bitter. Medium body. Okay.

Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is spicy with lots of clove and anise, pepper, malt, caramel, some cinnamon. Flavour is medium sweet and light bitter with a medium body. Bit overdone on the spices, would have been better with more subtlety.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Toasted malt aroma with caramel, toffee, light cocoa, fruity notes with some red fruits in there. Flavour is moderate sweet with a relatively bitter finish for a Dunkler Bock. Body is medium. Nicely fruity and bitter for the style, I really like this one.
