A black beer. Dry, medicinal aroma. Flavor is much better however, with sour cherry, making this a good sour ale, or a fruit beer. Medium palate. I like the bite from the sour cherries.

Sampled from the tap at 2010 FOBAB. Poured a near clear caramel amber with small bubbly off-white head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma had a light fruit note with strong caramel, biscuit and sweet grain as well as a somewhat strong bourbon. Flavor began with light apple with growing sweet grains and caramel with a bit of bourbon.

Sampled from the tap at 2010 FOBAB. Poured black with a light brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a slight alcohol note with roasted malts and a nice slight dry cherry note. Flavor started with dry sour cherries that were joined by roasted malt with a slight alcohol backing. A real nice mouthfeel.

Sampled from the tap at the 2010 FOBAB. Poured a clear urine yellow with a white head that dissipated quickly to the edges. Aroma was full of a nice sour note with a nice backing horse blanket note as well. Flavor began tart and became tart with sour fruit and a bit of horse blanket coming out in the finish.

GABF 2010 - I want to love this, since I loved smoked lagers, but I think the light character of the helles makes it easy to overdo the smoke - that is the case here - the smoke is rich and tasty, but the light malt character of the helles is not enough to support it, making the beer kind of taste like hoppy liquid smoke - I never thought I would say this, but the smoke is too much.

Sampled from the tap at the 2010 GTMW. Poured a dark brown with with a yellow brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Flavor was sweet with grain and wheat notes and a bit of underlying light fruit. Flavor was similar with sweet wheat and grain and a nice growing light fruit note.

75 cL bottle. Pours hazy orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is dry raspberry and light acetone. Sweet, citric and distinct raspberry fruity flavoured. Citric fruity finish. Lovely. Rather rich fruity.

Winterfest ’10. A black, thick, rich beer. As a general rule, I don’t like bourbon-aged beers, but Fitgers knows how to do it right. The cherry is immediately evident before the glass is even near my nose, but the bourbon is also unmistakable, and because there isn’t too much of it, it doesn’t overwhelm the other qualities. Some vanilla aroma and flavor, with a lightly sour cherry flavor underneath the dry malt body.

I purchased this growler on October 14th at the brewpub when I was driving between Lutsen and Minneapolis. Enjoyed 6 days later. Pour is hazed copper ruby with a a slightly off white head that falls fast. Nice splotchy white lacing as the beer goes down. Aroma of citrus peel - resin bitterness, elements of pineapple fruit, and a nice blast of crystal malt in the back - well balanced IPA. Taste is bitter resin hops out of the gate, then the sharp citrus peel, followed by the resin earthy malt that picks up in the back. As with the nose, the taste is nicely balanced. Palate is medium, dryish finish with lower carbonation, easy to drink. Would have liked to try this on cask (I believe it was available). Nice and fresh IPA.

Beer #28 at GTMW ’09. It’s quarter to four, you can start to smell the desperation of people trying to get in as many beers as possible before the fest ends at 6:00. Märzen color, light brown, very clear, with a thick head. Smell is smoky but not bacony. A little malt smell, too. But a lot of smoke in taste, even though I keep trying the smoked beers, it gets a little tiring here.
