On tap at Flying Saucer Houston. Pours a very hazy burnt orange with a gray head that lasts throughout the beer and laces slightly. Aroma is full of citrus with some rind and grapefruit as well as a hint of flora. Flavor starts with sweet citrus, but has more rind and grapefruit for a bitter finish.

Blanchard’s, Allston 650ml ($5.50): Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of roasted malts and plenty of citrus. Taste is very grapefruit hops, more so slanted in that direction than any other Black IPA, I’ve ever had. Kind of strange and perhaps is an intentionally unbalanced beer. In any case, I though it was drinkable enough.

12oz bottle pours a nice looking mahogany with semi loose mocha head. The aroma offers up dark roasted coffee , dark roasted malts and chocolate as well as spicy and earthy hops in the background. The taste jumps at you all at once with a rolling and twisting mix of dark roasted coffee, spicy hops, resiny bitter pine hops, some chocolate and dark roasted to burnt malts. As the taste goes to midway and then toward the finish the highly roasted to brunt malts take over the flavor leaving timid levels of spicy and resiny hops and coffee behind mumbling to themselves in the corner. Nice stuff.

New 4 pack Black IPA, 8 dollars, yes please. Pours a solid black with a frothy creamy khaki head that sticks around forever a leaves lots of sticky lace. Smell is piney and citrusy with hints of garlic and a solid roasted grain backbone. Smells like a hoppy porter, but these two style lines are so blurry who the hell knows. Taste is roasted coffee with a mineral edge. Pine and citrus come out to cut through the roast and almost succeed. Mineral earthy roasty finish lingers after every sip. Moderate carbonation and body with a resinous acridic mouthfeel. Decent black IPA but really straddling the porter line with this one. I’m a bit disappointed that the artwork didn’t make it onto the 12oz bottle label, oh well.

Bomber from Half Time. Pours hazy dirty gold with a transient fizzy white head. Aromas of orange zest and spice. Med body. Flavor is lots of clove, lots of orange zest, and some sort of hop bitter. Not your lazy Wit. This one works hard on flavor. Refreshing. Very good.
