Description

Small if stable head, very lightly yellowish over hazy orangey ochre beer. Yeasty nose, sweetish and faintly spicy; Yeast, white candi sugar, herbal hops, weeds. Pretty dry flavour & MF. Yeast goes over into white bread whilst the spice turns to peppery hops. Dry, if pretty carbonated feel, slick and even bit velvety texture, faint alcohol. Yeastfeatures very prominent. Seen that many tasters complain of excess sweetness, this one being rather dry, I think the yeast remains very active inside - which might become risky in time. 6/4/7/3/14

Bottle shared with Goedele at Kantien in Ghent. Joris Cambie's take on the old tripel theme, with thick, tightly lacing, off-white, stable, moussy head and warm peach blonde robe with visible strings of fizz. Aroma of ripe banana and a whole lot of it but not so much bubblegum, actually coming across as if real banana puree is in here somewhere, followed by sugarloaf, gingerbread, honey, apple sauce, camomile tea, mashed potato, soggy white bread, roses. Sweet onset, a ton of the ripe banana ester but again not descending into bubblegum, stewed pear and ripe red apple notes, lots of residual white sugars laying a honeyish flavour over a full, fluffy, bready malt sweet middle, quite sharply carbonated but not more so than average for a tripel. Honeyish and banana sweetness stretch well into the finish, accompanied by lingering, very pleasant breadiness, a white peppery hop bitter touch and warming, 'jenever'-ish but non-astringent alcohol; the hops add a delicately floral, camomile- and sweetclover-like retronasal aroma bearing witness of the fact that the brewer is actually a hop farmer and knows how to apply his products in a noble, elegant and quite refined way. Very sweet tripel, but very delicate at the same time - and in that sense I'd recommend this well over Tripel Karmeliet or other more industrial examples.

330ml bottle from Vanuxeem. Pours a deep hazy brown, small pale tan head. Aroma has caramel and nutty dark malts. Taste brings to mind a lightly sweet cassonade-tinged Belgian dubbel, with some caramel dunkel notes and a little soft cocoa. Not bad.
