Martin Townshend founded the brewery in 2005 with immediate access to Nelson hops as well as a beautiful supply of water, drawn up from the Motueka aquifer to brew with. These two ingredients combined malt barley, yeast and a large dose of passion for brewing using traditional methods have seen the brewery jump to prominence, winning awards and accolades from the NZ Brewing industry, including being Championed NZ Brewery & Manufacturer of the Year in 2014!

Bottle, 5.0%. Clear amber with a modest off white head. Fruity and earthy aroma with gooseberry, tropical fruit, onion. Fairly light bodied. A bit of bread crust, lots of fruit, quite a lot of earthy, herbal and oniony flavours as the bitterness builds. The earthiness seemed a bit much at first, but it did balance the fruit in a way.

Threatened to creep out of the bottle. Hazy gold with a huge white head that’s like beaten egg whites. Lovely but reserved aroma of grass, gooseberries, passionfruit, crackers. 7+ Light, creamy texture. Clean, not that sweet, no minerally touch that is a (fine) feature of some NZ lagers. At first it’s hard to tell where the almost sour citrus and berry flavours end and bitterness begins, but after a time the fruit seems more juicy and the bitterness more distinct. Some minor herbal notes. Best NZ pils so far, which is saying plenty. [3.9] Several 500ml bottles were like the above. A couple of 330ml bottles were OK (3.3ish) but a bit muddled with duller hops. It seems they’ve had problems with contracting out. Leaving the score as was and hoping they get it together because this was very good.

Bottle, 330ml. Clear amber with an inch of off white head. Aroma of grapefruit and lemon blossoms, caramel, some bread. A fair bit of body for under 5%. Lowish carbonation. Sweet gives way to bitter pretty quickly in the taste. There’s some dried fruit in with the toffee and citrus flavours. Floral and herbal lemon dominates at the end. A trifle overhopped for mine, but pretty good.

2015 version, 7.8%. Amber with a coat of cream head. Aroma of caramel fudge, grass, hazelnuts, vanilla, white pepper, hints of other spices like galangal, cardamon. A bit lighter bodied than expected and perhaps less sweet too. But delightful almost milky texture with low carbonation. Layers of caramel, some nuts, spices. Moderate but insistent bitterness. Lovely beer.

Sampled at Where the Wild Beers Are, 6/7/14
I found this to be a pretty unique and very tasty beer. The sour flavors with chocolate and coffee make for a nice combination.
