Description
Lhasa Beer is a super premium quality all-natural, all-malt lager beer made with the world's finest ingredients including Himalayan Spring Water, Saaz hops, yeast, and a maximum possible quantity of Tibetan barley. The native Tibetan barley, unlike most barley varieties in the world, has no hull. Thus it adds to the beer's body and gives it an extra dimension of flavor while eliminating some of the undesirable astringency that can come from the grain hulls.

Standard pale lager from Tibet, brewed in Lhasa at about 3650 meters above sea level, hence the name. Thanks to tderoeck for this rare country tick. Supposed to form a thick, snow white, moussey head when fresh (not present in my sample anymore); very pale golden blonde robe, metallic, with rosy tinge. Aroma of old dried herbs (dried hyssop or something alike - reminiscent of the old jars with dried herbs from her garden my grandmother kept stored in her kitchen), dried green tea, spiced crackers, straw, iron. Subduedly sweetish onset, very simple, clean, softish carb (doubtlessly sharper when fresh), thin and slick body; vague sourish undertone, grainy core, watery but interesting in the finish when this dried hyssop herbaceousness returns, albeit without much bitterness. No idea where this strong herbal aspect comes from: was some or other Tibetan medicinal herb used here as a flavouring? Not that I can find anywhere, in any case, but have a point for originality - without this one entertaining element, this would have been about the blandest and thinnest lager imaginable.

Sampled at Tim's place, huge thanks! Clear pale golden color, no head. Aroma and flavor are malts, dusty hayish, very distant cardboard bitterness. Low body and carbonation.

New Country - 194. Wieksza satysfakcja z wysokosci na jakiej warzone niz nowy kraj, czy zwlaszcza smak. Jasne zlociste, slomkowe z nie trwala piana, bardzo delikatne wodniste bardzo. No coz oczekiwac 3650 m.n.p.m. w Himalajach w tybecie to wyżej niż zbierane sa ziarna kawy arabica.

Tried this at a restaurant in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture sitting opposite some monks from the local monastery. Of course the beer is nothing to write home about, but beggars can’t be choosers in these parts.
