Description
In 1933 Charles Caulier, a miner, left his job and decided to set up as a beer reseller in Bonsecours, a small village in the south of Belgium. In 1980, Roger and Linda Caulier took over the family business and continued progressing.
The warehouses soon became too cramped so they took over the buildings of a former tannery in Péruwelz. The products of the Brewery are still brewed in these buildings today.
In the early 1990s, Roger and Linda decided to market their own beer: a custom-made high fermentation blonde. The Bon Secours was born! These were promising beginnings but they still dreamt of creating their own brewery. A dream which became reality when they bought the machinery from the Deneve brewery in Schepdaal and inaugurated the first brew in 1996!
In 2007, the NV Brasserie Caulier was declared bankrupt. At the beginning of 2008, the activities were transferred to a private limited company of the sons of Roger Caulier, who subsequently adopted the name Brasserie et Distillerie Caulier. As of 2012, Laurent, Bertrand and Vincent joined their parents in the adventure. In order to respond to the growing demand for its products, in 2018 the Brewery began a large multi-annual programme of investments with the goal of tripling its production capacity. The historical Brewing House has been extended, new fermentation and storage tanks have been added, and the bottling line has been modernised.

An opaque brown beer with a huge light brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, spices, and celery. The flavor is very sweet spicy with the alcohol shining thru.

(Bottle 33 cl) This is the original version from Brasserie Rezette/Rochefortoise in Rochefort/Eprave. These Rochefortoises are turning into being a pleasure indeed. Dark amber, hazy with a fairly full, white head. Spicy and malty-sweetness that ends on a lightly, refreshing bitterness. 151297

(Bottle 33 cl) This is the original version from Brasserie Rezette/Rochefortoise in Rochefort/Eprave. Golden, hazy beer with a nice head. Lovely soft and mild ale with a pleasant low (sort of...) alcohol. If it wasn’t for the bitter finish you could almost mistae this for a Witbier. 151297

Bottle Murky brown body. Caramel-brown head, mostly diminishing. Nose of caramel. Initial moderately bitter, lightly sweet finish. Heavily bitter, lightly sweet finish. I really like the spiciness and bitterness in the flavour. But maybe a little bit watery. A very nice brown beer indeed.

(Bottle 75 cl) A special brew for the Millennium that you can still be lucky to find the odd sample of in some speciality stores - at least I did. The bottle itself is a small piece of art: pin-shaped with a painted label of fireworks in beautiful colours. Sealed with cork, cap AND sealing wax. Takes quite an effort just to open it. Fully golden, very unclear with gigantic floaties and a powerful head. Extremely full-bodied and potent, pronounced bitterness and a slightly perfumy palate. Not a bad beer, but it doesn’t really live up to the bottle and packaging. Wonder how it develops... 230505

Large, rocky, off-white head. Amber, sparkling body. Nose of maple syrup. Lightly sweet, lightly bitter initial flavour. Lightly bitter finish.

(swing top bottle) Pale and hazy blond body with a huge rocky white head. Citric nose with peppery spice. Lively carbonated, medium bodied. Slightly sour citrus-fruity taste with a spicy finish. A bit too alcoholic for my taste.

(Bottle 50 cl) Wallonian Caulier is best known for it’s line of good ales called "Bon-Secours". The brewery, however, does make other products, for instance this beer which gets it’s name from the hops that it’s seasoned with: the Czech Saazer, mostly known for the excellent pilseners from it’s home country. If it’s because of age, I don’t know, but there’s not much of a hop-aroma to this beer. Instead we have a golden, slightly hazy blonde beer with a very tall head, a lot of dryness and a discreet bitterness. 220503

Cloudy yellow color, big head. Aroma was horrible, sweet and sour dust, some wet hay, maybe some hop. Taste is better, but it lacks the complexity like a Christoffel Blond.

Beautiful portwine ruby (after adding all extra yeast, almost brown), big brown fluffy head, lace. Aroma has plums, hops, alcohol and hints of rye bread mixed with sugar. Medium-bodied. Tasty, nutty palate. Figs and plums. In the middle alcohol carries a bit harder and metallic flavor, finishing to oaky notes. Dry aftertaste. Excellent dubbel.
