Oldfields Farm, Lambswick Drinks Company, Frith Common, WR15 8JX, England
Description
Oldfields Cider is produced by us, The Thompson family, on our 250-acre farm Oldfields, nestled here in the heart of the Teme Valley, Worcestershire. We took this place on in 1960 when it was a hilly, scrub filled smallholding that one supportive neighbour at the time said would ‘never make a farm’. But Jim, the father of current Oldfields custodian Geoff, was undeterred and moved his family in, along with a creaking ancient cider press and apple scratter he’d not long bought from an old boy in Cowsden. And while we were unable to do anything about the hills, over the next few decades those scrubby Broom filled banks were transformed into a thriving verdant farm and put to good use. Something else that was put to good use was that fateful apple press. Every year since 1960 we have made cider. For many years, this was done with that very same press extracting juice that was then transferred a bucket full at a time into old whiskey barrels, for our own consumption and that of our neighbours and friends. Those same neighbours always made time to come along and pitch in on pressing day to secure their summer cider ration.

750ml bottle. Pale golden colour, fizzy short-lived white foam head and fruity green apple aroma. Taste is dry tart apple, apple skins, fruity, light barnyard and tannins. Spritzy mouthfeel, light bodied, high carbonation, dry sour finish. Nicely drinkable.

75cl bottle from Saucy Pears. Appearance - amber in the same way as a Provence Rose wine is. Steady bubbles of course. Nose - very fresh green/red apples. Taste - all the less edible bits of the apple. The skin and the core. Palate - light bodied, with a long lean dry texture which extends through the long dry finish. Helluva dry! Overall -if this is their medium dry cider, there properly dry version must be palate rupturing.

Bottle from Saucy Pears. General comments are that it waste enjoyable in the sun. Generally balanced and good depth of flavour but just missing the dry finish of the drier version (clearly).

Bottle from Saucy Pears. Appearance - amber with virtually zero carbonation, which is preferable. Nose - bitter and sweet apples at the same time. Taste - fresh apples with good but not overpowering acidity. Palate - medium bodied with a big tangy texture and a dry tangy finish. Overall - I do like cider, but I’d struggle to tell one from another, certainly within a style. Enjoyed this though.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Clear golden colour, white foam head and aroma of fruity apple with hint of wood & funk. Taste is sweetish, apple, apple skin, green apple, bittersweet with some light tannins and slight woody oak & barnyard notes.Thin mouthfeel, light bodied, low to medium carbonation, fruity apple lightly tannic finish. Quite OK.

Bottle shared at Chrisso’s May 2014 tasting 25/05/2014. Thanks to Matt for this one. Aroma is fresh apple, rubber. Golden coloured pour with a thin but lasting white head. Crytal clear. Flavour is decent apple, medium sweet, some candied sugars. Decent clean cider.

75cl bottle from Tanners Wines, Shrewsbury in a grand-looking bottle. Pours peachy-pink with a sugary apple pie pastry crust aroma. Has a light, sparkling rosé mouthfeel with an impeccably vivid crisp, fruity taste; every little nuance of those apples comes through with absolute clarity from its fleshy sweetness to the sharpness of its core right down to the pips. It’s an unadulterated, light fruitiness that’s rare to find in cider these days. Dry finish with next to no tannins. Beautiful, flavoursome cider, perhaps more like an apple rosé than a standard cider.

500ml bottle @ Chriso May 14 tasting, thanks to me. Pours gold, syrupy sweet, sugar, artificial apple juice, very accessible, boring, mainstream cider blend.
