About
Founded in 2015, Lupum - or “wolf” in Latin - is the first and only farmhouse brewery in Portugal. Born as an experiment in the cellars of Antonio Lopes' family farm, the moniker was inspired by the founder's family name, meaning “son of wolf.” A laboratory technician turned mad scientist, António began with a singular goal - to brew what he loved, and to brew it well.
Nestled within the hills of the Douro River in the quiet parish of Avintes, just minutes inland from the infamous wine cellars of Porto, Lupum continues to stay true to its wild DNA: strong beers with a daring twist for the adventurous of heart, a work of love with total irreverence for the mandates of convention. Pretty fine imperial stout. Maple is light here. Roast and chocolate. Caramel, booze and dates. Black oily pour. This is huge for sure, but still balances well. Bittersweet finish. Booze isn't as potent as you'd think in the flavour. Bottle from Outro Lado.

Cloudy dark brown beer, no head at all. Aroma: oh my, yes! Lots of caramel, cinnamon notes, tonka beans, very nice stuff, very intense, more dark caramel. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of caramel, sweet malts, tonka, some vanilla, more caramel, a bit sugary. Aftertaste: dried fruits, sweet caramel, sugary finish, very pleasant stuff!

Clear dark brown to almost black beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet, lots of caramel, a bit sugary impression, vanilla, alcohol, chocolate, more dark caramel, a hint of maple syrup, good! MF: soft carbon, full body. Taste: bitter roast up front, lot of alcohol, sugary, caramel, more roast, coffee, malty, bitter touch. Aftertaste: yeasty, more bitterness, hoppy, coffee notes, maple syrup, more coffee.

Brune foncée/noire, pas de col, le tout finement huileux doré au verre.
Arôme met bien en avant les effluves de tonka -délicat, un peu sur un bouquet tropical - amande ce bouquet avec une touche rappelant le chocolat.
Palais est épais marqué, bonne dose de malts - entre caramel, grillé et cacao le tout avec le caractère bien placé de la fève de tonka - petite douceur avec une fine pointe d'amande avec un clin d'oeil épicé délicat. Le tout reste sur une base assez classique de gros stout.

Arôme rend bien les effluves d'érablen petite note de fruité sec - bouquet de ce barley oscille plus sur une approche anglaise, fruits noirs en retrait avec effluve de sucre de cane / érable.
Palais est plaisant sec sur de belles notes de fruits secs - raisins, léger sucre résiduel, caramélisé, petite touche de pomme verte caramélisée, collant aux lèvres - pointe un peu plus organique de l'érable. Un barleywine qui se laisse déguster.

Draught, half pint. @Caminha Artbeerfest 2021, Caminha (Portugal). 15/08/2021 [#4.188 Global - #249 Portugal - #5 Lupum] Copper colour with a medium off-white head. Aroma: biscuits, toffee, caramel malts. Taste: toffee, raisins, caramel and soft vanilla. Seeet and dry finish. Last one of the Artbeerfest 2021. Next one please!
