Description
Kleiburg is the beer of the Klei Monastery: a spiritual and hospitable place in the Amsterdam Bijlmer neighbourhood. We are a social enterprise and are inspired by traditional Belgian monastery beers and give it an innovative twist. This results in very own specific beers: always recognizable and at the same time surprising.

Bottle @ home. The 5.3% is hand written on the cap by the great PotjeBier, respect! Clear reddish color, small off-white head. Aroma of malts, a slight sweetness but completely surprisingly there’s hints of peat in there. And it can’t explain why, it definitely is not in my glass. Weird. Taste malts, lightly sweetish, lightly yeast and a bit herbal. Average to decent body and carbonation. Hmm, a bit weird.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Thompson. Opaque dark brown to black color, average sized beige to light brown head. Aroma is malts and loads of liquorice with a touch of smoke and peat in the background. Taste malts, again liquorice, a sort of slightly sweet but mostly dark malt bitter. Medium body, lightly oily texture, suitable carbonation. Nice one and very interesting.

Bottle, courtesy of potje bier. Copper color. Aroma has malt, peaty smoke, bandaid and some iron. Strange taste of mild sweet peat, pine, herbs and some mild bitter hops. It’s a bit of a mess and could be flawed, but I still like it. It’s not an ipa or tripel though, more like a strong ale.

Bottle thanks to Potjebier, tried two different batches, small samples. Almost clear amber to copper color, short head. Aroma of grapefruit and pine, some peaty smoke, dark tea, bit spicy yeast. Quite dry in taste, peaty smoke, leafy bitterness, dark tea. Weird and seems to have some flaws, but still I would be able to finish a bottle with ease. Ok.

Sample from 30 (8.8%) and 33cl (9.5%) bottle, thanks for tonight’s beers Potje! Murky amber-brown colour, off-white head. Aroma of a hint of peat, earth, sweet malts, caramel, leafy hops, green tea. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, leafy bitter, tea, earth, liquorice root, light peat/fingerpaint, light floral, firm and raw bitter finish. 9.5% version was a bit more mellow and balanced imho.

Bottle @ benzai. Huge chunks in my glass, huge off-white head and murky amber beer. Smells cheese, moldy, feet, malts. Tastes ladybug. Not even kidding. If you’ve played outside a lot you’ll recognise it instantly. Maybe some fingerpaint on the side. Bizar. Medium body, soft carbo. This taste cannot be intended. Might be a bad bottle or something.

30 cl bottle @ home. Golden color, hazy. A bit frothy white head, with reasonable retention. Aroma’s: wheat, fruity, light roasted, light vegetal. Retronasal there’s more to it: light sweet, wheat fruity, light bitter, just hints of oaky tannines and light alcohol. Flavor is light sweet, fruity, just slightly bitter. Alcohol doesn’t feel very strong, but it is warming a bit. Light to medium bodied. Finishes with a light bitterness. The port/wood is hardly noticeable, but the beer is decent enough.
