Handpull cask at the Crown Hotel, Downham Market. Copper with a big cream-coloured head and lots of lacing. Malt led aroma, but there’s also woodsmoke, redcurrant and forest floor. Bittersweet malty taste turns into a fairly stern hoppy bitter at the end of the sip. Long astringent bitter finish. A very good recipe.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours dark brown with aa quickly dissipating white head. Shed loads of chocolate and vanilla in the nose, bit of warm spice action. The sweet chocolate cake/ice cream continues into the flavour. Quite a satisfying brew.

500ml bottle: BBD end of Jul 2016. Poured into a glass tankard at home on 20th Nov 2015. Live rating. Deep ruby red body, the head a full tanned affair. The nose has a malty lead with a mixed herb feel and a slight Vanilla ester or two, certainly spicy and yet smooth (if an aroma can be smooth). The taste follows the same lines, malty, smooth and herb like with a Vanilla semi-sweetness pushing on. Full bodied and easy to drink, a very pleasant Porter from start to finish.

500ml Bottle conditioned, at home on 6th Nov 2015. Poured slowly and carefully into a UK pint sleeve. Dark ruby with a huge tanned topping. Malts rule the nose and also keep the hops at bay in the flavour, semi-sweet with a bitter hop undertone that balances out the heavy malt content nicely. I very pleasant beer in deed, full of flavour, character and depth.

Dark brown flat, slightly translucent. Cinnamon, cedar, turpentine in the aroma. Taste is more bitter than sweet, fairly fruity. A bit of cold black coffee and raspberry on the finish. Body is fairly thin. It’s ok.

Cask at the Draymans Son, Ely. Very dark brown, opaque, fairly flat with some tan head. Liquorice and hazelnut coffee smell. Fairly mild but enticing. Sweet nutty taste, with more liquorice in the aftertaste. Full body although could do with a bit more carbonation. Really enjoyed this.

Gravity cask at the Liberty Belle, Ely. Black with a medium-sized cream-coloured head. Coffee and cream, bit of walnut whip on the aroma. Sweet and almost slightly fruity initial taste, fading to a pronounced chalky bitter in the finish. Slightly thinner body than I’d have liked, but otherwise a gorgeous experience.
