Keg at Shilling. It pours lightly hazy pale gold with a small white head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, fresh lemon, banana, flump, bread, cracker and nougat. The taste is crisp, soft, mellow sweetness, banana candy, straw, grass, white pepper, clove rock with a smooth finish. Medium body andsoft, yet prickly carbonation. Perhaps a touch sweet, but drinks very easy. Decent.

Cask at the brewpub. It pours clear amber with a medium white head. The aroma is fresh, tropical fruit vibe, peach, passion fruit, apricot and piss. The taste is very dry upfront, big soapy citrus character, waxy peel, pithy fruits, grapefruit, straw and grass with a dry, soapy finish. Medium body and moderate, foamy. Good condition. Far too soapy for my liking. OK.

On tap at the brewpub pours a clear gold with some lacing white head. Nose has candy, tea, flowers, lemon, mild perfume/herbs. Flavor has lavender, a little vanilla, flowers, tea, lemon, a little sweet n low. Finishes a touch tannic. Otherwise, pretty nice offering.

Sampled at the brewpub pours an opaque black with some lacing, sudsy off white head. Nose is heavy with tar and burnt wheat, wow, haven’t had a beer that’s smelt this ashy and yet not smokey, cracker, buckwheat, molasses too, dark chocolate espresso bean. Flavor is a bit smoother and more approachable, raisin, molasses, but a lot of burnt grasses, some BBQ sauce, coffee bean. Dry finish. Quite unique within the style.

At the brewpub, pours a clear amber with lots of sticky, lacing white head. Nose has yeast, some malt, a little fall fruit, some candy, some orange hop. Flavor straightens it out more, malt, a little caramel, some apple, orange, candy, a little yeast, a little metal. Finishes dry. Nose makes you wonder if they tried for a riff, flavor is straight amber ale.
