Bottle. Golden pour. Aroma of grassy hop, grainy malt, grapefruit, orange and dry yeast. Taste has soft juicy grapefruit, grainy malt, grassy bitter hop, dry yeast, citrus and a little pine. Fine Belgian pale ale, the bitter hops work well with the yeast.

Food pairing: grilled garlic butter lobster and risotto

Clear deep blond beer, big creamy dense white head, stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: hint of banana, fruity, some peaches. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: nice bitterness, malty, little fruity, hint of banana. Aftertaste: malty, nice bitterness, some citrus, grapefruit, peaches, bit grassy, hay, decent, not great, but that’s probably due to age. My bad. I’ll be mild on scoring this one.

Good pairing result: the bitterness goes well with the buttered lobster and creamy risotto, without being too overpowering for the subtle sweet lobster meat.

33cl bottle from Sequoia Bio & Natural Market Jourdan in Brussels. F: huge, stable, white. C: straw pale yellow, light hazy. A: malty, citrus, floral, spicy, bit orange, wheat touch. T: light watery body, bit orange, bit oily mouthfeel, wheat touch, mineral, decent bitterness, higher carbonation, very easy drinkable, good one, enjoyed.

Rye pale ale hopped with Simcoe, Amarillo and Chinook by this new bicycling-themed beer company, longneck bottle from a health food store in Ghent. Very thick and frothy, egg-white, membrane-like lacing, stable head, initially clear pale straw blonde robe with pale apricot tinge, misty with sediment. Aroma of green onions, unripe banana, lime blossom, raw potato juice, old 'herbes de Provençe', pear, lemonbalm, white bread slices. Fruity onset, some banana, pear, green melon, touch pineapple, restrained in sweetness; lively carbonation, slick and soapy mouthfeel. White-bready maltiness with lingering 'green-yellow' fruitiness but lots of weedy, moderately zesty hoppiness as well, quite aromatic, with leek-, lime- and lemonbalm-like impressions retronasally, providing a long-lasting, yet not too harsh bitterness in a finish which also exhibits chalky and lingering soapy aspects. The rye has established more soapiness and slickness (almost wheat-like) here than typical 'dull' spiciness, so I probably would never have guessed its presence hadn't I known; modern hopping and a relatively clean profile place this beer in the same stylistic approach and quality level as that BMX IPA I had earlier, but I think adding some more cara malt and upgrading the hop dosage a bit could really improve this beer further. In this form still a very enjoyable, modern quenching ale, with only light Belgian-yeasty aspects (banana ester). Quite nice, but not as nice as the BMX IPA; I heard a white IPA is on its way as well so looking forward to tasting that one too.

Clear bright yellow beer, big solid creamy white head, bit irregular adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: citrus, little spicy, some malts, touch of grapefruit. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: nice bitterness, citrus notes, bit grassy, dry, little malty, grains. Aftertaste: hoppy, grassy, grapefruit, little sweet, yeasty, ripe banana, spicy, some cardamom, not bad.

Clear blond beer, big creamy dense white head, stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very soapy, floral, slightly fruity, sugary, some marzipan, malts. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: fruity start, nice bitterness, bit grassy, hoppy, hint of citrus. Aftertaste: citrus, pretty soapy, good bitterness, dry finish, bit grassy.

One of two new American style beers commissioned by a three-headed hobby brewery in Brussels. These three guys are passionate about biking, hence the bicycle theme. Longneck bottle from some organic food shop in Ghent, big thanks to my lovely girlfriend Goedele for this unexpected tick. Frothy, pillowy, cobweb-lacing, egg-white, big head on a misty apricot blonde beer. Colourful and alluring nose of lime zest, orange flesh, lemon blossom, dried mango, bitter dandelion juice, bread crumbs, green pear, papaja, hints of pine resin, dry earth, sweet shallots and grapefruit juice. Restrainedly sweetish onset, clean 'Anglo-Saxon' profile with fruity notes of peach, mandarin and unripe melon, lightly fizzy carbonation, smooth and slick body; cereally, very lightly biscuity malt sweetish middle soaked in spicy and fruity hoppiness, peppery and grapefruity with a quinine-like, long bitter ending, all the while releasing retronasal aromas of pink grapefruit, fried onion, paprika powder and dried mango. West Coast style IPA with a light tropical mango accent, so old school with a modern tweak, but decidedly un-Belgian, clean, streamlined, confidently bittering and, above all, much and much better than I was expecting. Great find, now for that other one!

33cl bottle from BelgoMarkt organic shop, Ixelles, Brussels. F: huge, egg-white, long lasting. C: gold, light hazy. A: tangerine, orange, mellow tropical fruits, bit pine resin, caramel touch. T: medium malty base, orange, grapefruits, mango, bit pineapple, nice harmonic bitterness, pine resin, medium to high carbonation, very good balanced, fully enjoyed.
