Bottle, as Hiruzen Kogen Beer. Need to give this a re-rate. Rich malt nose, rather Czech in style, Bread, light herbal hops. Rich, bready, malty flavor with Saaz-like hopping. Not outstanding, but a solid Svetly. Quite full, oily body. Yeast seems to add fullness. Medium golden-orange, cloudy. I’m not sure if they changed the recipe since 2009, but I have had this a few times since the first rating, and it was never that bad again. Decent bitterness in the finish. Bottle, 2009: 6/2/5/2/11. Light gold color. Sweet, buttery aroma with cookies and biscuits, and a bit of hops. Very sweet and biscuity flavor, lacking balance. Cloying, with not enough hops. Uninteresting. I expected better.

Bottle from Yamaoka. 60% wheat malt. Bright, cloudy, lemon yellow. Low head. Fragrant aroma of wheat malt, bananas, spice, slightly sweet, citrus but just a tiny sour edge. Smooth, crisp flavor, strong wheat malt, bananas and fruit, slight sour edge and a bit buttery. Very well balanced. Slightly tangy with a bit of citrus. Body slightly lighter than usual, crisper. Very nice overall, with good balance and no faults, though not super exciting.

Bottle from Yamaoka, 2007. Cloudy, deep gold color, with a medium-tall head. Very rich malt aroma, slightly grainy, slightly sweet. Fruity, bananas, yeasty, and light hops. Very rich malt flavor. A bit fruity with a touch of bananas. Creamy, rich, medium to full bodied. Good hop bitterness for balance. Great balance. Creamy and full-flavored. Finely balanced, gently bitter hop and malt finish. Faint hop bitterness lasts a long time. One of the most flavorful Japanese lagers I have had. Truly excellent.

A “white ale” with white chocolate cocoa added. Probably a wheat-based ale, although the beer character was almost completely hidden by the white chocolate. It was certainly interesting, but rancidly sweet and basically medicinal. A failure, and probably a really bad idea to begin with.

I am not sure why my insane friend bought this. Surely it wasnt because he thought it might be good. I asked, if people thought this beer would be crap or completely crap before tasting. This white chocolate and orange peel brew was the latter, no questions about it. Certified ’complete crap’ by me and my friends. I think it was aiming for a wit with the orange peels, and certainly it hits the nose with white chocolate in the mouth, but who wants white chocolate in beer? To finish my 3 oz sample took a good 20 min and I was very proud of myself I did it in such a short time. avoid at all costs is my suggestion.

Bottle from Yamaoka. Dark chocolate added to a dunkel or probably their schwarz. Good roasted malt bitterness matched with the bitterness of the chocolate, which was clearly present but not overdone. Not overly sweet, rather nice.

Draught at the Microbrewer’s Beer Festa in Hiroshima. Very light color, almost like a Vienna. Light body as well. Big caramel flavor, nutty as well, and not too sweet. A nice dunkel that avoids the pitfall of too much sweetness while still having good flavor.

Is there beer in this juice? Clear, light golden. Too much muscat, I can’t pick up much else besides that. Smooth, syrupy body.

Dark brown color, with quick disappating light brown head. The nose has roasted malts, molasses and prunes, and a touch of fruitiness, which is pretty damn good for the style IMO. The body is unbelievably light has some chocolate and molasses notes. The finish has some chocolate notes and a touch of fruitness that blends well with a subtle alcohol twang. For a 7% beer, it hides it really well. Could drink this all night long
