De kazematten aan het Houten Paard werden gebouwd rond 1680 naar plannen van Vauban, de grote vestingingenieur van Lodewijk XIV. Deze drie unieke kazematten of soutterains maken deel uit van de 17e Eeuwse vestingen die de stad Ieper omwallen.Gedurende de eeuwen werden deze souterrains gebruikt als opslagplaats voor munitie en legermaterieel. Ze deden ook dienst als slaap- en schuilplaats voor de troepen die Ieper tijdens de vele belegeringen hebben verdedigd. Zo richtten de Britse troepen tijdens Wereldoorlog I de kazematten in als 'mess' voor de officieren. Hun commandopost, rustplaats en veldhospitaal werden in 'Hotel de Remparts', zoals de kazematten ironisch werden genoemd, ondergebracht. Ook de Britse soldatenkrant The Wipers Times werd er gedrukt. En nu is er dus een stadsbrouwerij op deze unieke locatie.

Clear pale golden colour, white head. Aroma of yeast, malts, spices. Light bitter flavour, light sweet malts. Malty finish, yeast, bitter notes.

330ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, reddish dark copper colour with average to huge, fluffy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Unspecific, herbal spicy yeasty aroma, maybe some lovage. Taste is dry, yeasty, sweet-ish sugary remnants, hints of rock sugar, some herbal spiciness, peppery finish. Lacks depth and width.

Bottle. Mid-brown with a light beige head. Yeasty aroma with dark berries, chocolate, spices and a curious (but not unpleasant) spoiling milk note. Light bodied, getting towards watery. Dark fruits, spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamon. Interesting, let down by the lack of presence.

Bottle at De La Gare. Pours light cloudy brown with a tan head. Aroma of yeast, spice, light herbs, toffee and caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Bottle from Mitra Bunnik, large sample. Slight hazy amber to copper color, short frothy head. Aroma of slight spicy yeast, bit caramel, bit toffee. Slight sweet in taste, slight bitter, touch of butterscotch. Tasty.

Thick, dense cream head over lively carbonated dark red-amber beer. Lightly sourish, lactic nose; yeast features, some wood, even fainter milk chocolate. Again some acidity in the mouth, if more restrained; lactic, caramel without sweetness; again some yeasty esters, faintly fruity. Creamy MF, titillating carbonation, slowly dwindling flavours. Reading other ratings, I wonder. This one might be one not to drink too fresh - an Oud Bruin in the making?
