Matera LaFontaine Saison de Riz 5.4% I bought this for 3 reasons: The label was decent The price was pretty low (3$?) It’s made using rice and I live in Japan so I was curious to try a Canadian take on that. Slightly opaque straw gold with an eggshell white head of foam that doesn’t linger is pretty standard for these kinds of beers. The aroma is lightly fruity while the taste is grainy, fruit and it finishes bone dry even though it starts off pretty full bodied. The abrasive carbonation doesn’t help. The taste has cork, wine like fruit and sweet light honey flavors. This is a pretty average beer and confirms that Japan does this style WAY better probably as they start off with higher quality rice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice floral coffee notes with subtle bourbon notes, light vanilla and rich black chocolate is quite exquisite. Taste is a nice mix of rich black chocolate notes with some light vanilla notes, some black chocolate notes with nice floral coffee notes with some subtle bourbon notes and light residual sugar notes to cut through the bitterness. Body is full with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol notes. This was quite the treat with super good drinkability and nice level of complexity.
