Draught at Tadg’s. I’m quite sure this version was brewed in Japan at Shiga Kogen. Milky, spicey aroma with coriander, nutmeg, citrus and other fruits, Belgian yeast. Big and black with a nice fine tan head. Strong sour, citrus edge to the flavor, a bit too strong, with spices, roasty malts, chocolate, light raisins. Complex and interesting, though a bit weird, and could lose the citrus.

Draft at Bulldog. For some reason there was no head and little carbonation in the beer. Bull is usually good with this, but I guess this was an exception. Lots of dark fruit and roasted character. Reasonably well balanced. Hardly mind blowing, but enjoyable enough, nonetheless.

Draught at Tadg’s. Pretty, glowing black with a nice tan head. Lightly roasted aroma with coffee; dry and slightly creamy. Smooth, soft malts, nicely roasted, with coffee and dark chocolate in the mouth. Creamy, with some berries. Light body, but smooth and full. Nice fruity, berry-like edge. A good dry stout, not particularly special, but smooth and tasty.

Draught at Q-Brick. Pretty orange-gold color with large fine head. Huge citrus hop aroma, grapefruit, mango and other tropical fruits, spices, cream. Flavor of mango, pineapple, grapefruit, with a dry Belgian yeast finish. Slightly dusty and farmyard finish. Great citrus throughout, with a strong tart to sour edge. Restrained but solid bitterness. Light carbonation. Creamy. A great American-hopped saison. No muddy yeast or over-done esters. Excellent as usual for the best brewery in Japan today.

Bottle, at Patricks. It pours a hazy, orange body topped by a minimal sized off-white head. There’s a nice malty sweetish-ness in the aroma, a whiff of alcohol too, but it’s the citrus peel and resins that do the heavy work. The flavor is pretty much the same, a base of sweetish pale malts where the resiny, citrus-peel tasting hops can do their job. Nice bitterness all the way. Full-bodied and with a certain warmth. A beer to sip slowly, or get you drunk really fast if you have a few of them. The sipping is the recommended way of drinking it, that way it’s really pleasant. 100213

Bottle, at Patricks. it pours a minimal sized off-white head over a hazy dark golden body. The aroma is on the hoppy side with pale malts in the back. Pine cones, citrus peel and a faint touch of vegetables. The flavor goes down the same road, piney and resiny flavors dominates with it’s bitterness, leaving the pale malts to a place in the back seat, where they do just what they are supposed to. It’s full bodied and deliciously dry, finishing bitter. I don’t like the little vegetal touch, but fortunately that’s only in the aroma. Else it’s a fine one, tasteful and quenching and it goes down almost too easily. 100213
